The Governor of Virginia is forbidden by the Constitution of the Commonwealth from serving consecutive terms (the only U.S. state in which gubernatorial incumbents are forbidden from running for governor); however, several governors have served multiple non-consecutive terms.
In Virginia, governors and lieutenant governors are elected separately, so the two can be of different political parties and can be political rivals.

In 1679, the colony had 289 Europeans of whom 142 were free-burghers and 191 slaves, as in Ceylon, the free-burghers in Kaapstad (Cape Town) were in most cases tavern-keeping or to a lesser extent craftsmen and shopkeeper.
Jan de la Fontaine, became governor in 1724 and he was in control of the Cape Colony until 1739, except for an interval of three years, when was governor Gysbert Noodt.
The first governor born in the Cape was appointed in 1739, he was Henry Swellengrebel, his name has been preserved in the town of Swellendam, which was founded during his government.

 Complete List of NYS Attorneys General
Defeated in race for Governor by Thomas Dewey in 1942.
Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

Between 1652 when Jan Van Riebeck became the first Govermor (for 10 years) the VOC appointed and dismissed 7 Governors before Simon Van der Stel (who was known for his diplomacy with the head office).
All the Governors before van der Stel, including Crudorp, were dismissed for violating their policy and issuing land grants to individuals.
