The Governor of New Jersey is considered one of the most powerful governors in the nation, as it is currently the only state-wide elected office in the state and appoints many government officials.
Former Acting Governor Codey was the last acting governor to serve simultaneously as Senate president, as a result of the Constitutional amendment approved by the voters in 2005.
All are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of a majority of the membership of the state senate.

 Beer, British Colonial Policy, 1754-1765
The ablest colonial governor of the time, William Shirley of Massachusetts, was, however, strongly in favor of a parliamentary union coupled with parliamentary taxation of the colonies.
Though all these plans, whether of colonial union or of parliamentary taxation, were intended for a permanent military establishment in the colonies in time of peace, their ultimate object was to effect the security of the colonies in the event of war.
The governor, Francis Bernard, wrote to Pitt on March 20, 1759, that New Jersey showed her zeal for the cause in voting 1000 men, as her population was only 70,000 to 80,000 and as she was spending yearly on the war £70,000, whereas Pennsylvania which was five times as populous, raised only £100,000.

The Connecticut colony (1635, 1636) was an overflow from the large Puritan population which had emigrated to Massachusetts Bay, and its principal settlements on the Connecticut river were made under the protection of the older colony.
In the internal government of the colonies generally there were three main factors, the governor, the governor's council, and the assembly chosen by the people, the second being the prototype of the State senate.
Among the colonies there was a marked quickening of conscience on the subject, beginning near the middle of the century, -when the Quakers inaugurated their effective opposition to slavery,--and showing tokens of increasing vitality till the adoption of the Federal Constitution in 1789.

 Morrison, Virginia Indian Trade to 1673
Governor Wyatt, reporting the disaster, said—“Indeed all trade with these Indians must be foreborne, and without doubt we must cleere them or they us out of the country.” Matters went that way.
Early in 1662 it was ordered that the Governor should cause by proclamation a prohibition of all Marylanders, English and Indians (”which they have already done to us”) and of all other Indians to the northward of Maryland from trucking, trading, bartering or dealing with any English or Indians to the South of that place.
Governor again in 1660, Sir William Berkeley was encouraged about the state of Virginia (see his very able Discourse and View of Virginia, 1663) and still open to conviction with regard to the back country.

Though religious toleration had been introduced into other colonies previously by individual proprietors or governors, this was the earliest legislative enactment in America asserting the principle of religious toleration.
Governor Berkeley, who had been Governor since 1642, had Charles II proclaimed as King and invited him to assume the administration of Virginia.
According to the Act all English possessions could allow only English or Colonial vessels entrance to their ports; certain articles, produced in the colonies, such as sugar and tobacco, were known as "enumerated" goods, and were to be shipped to England only.

Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
Until 1702 he was appointed by the governor, after which he was commissioned by the Crown.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

The newly taken lands were divided by King Charles II of England, who gave his brother, the Duke of York (later King James II) the region between New England and Maryland as a proprietary colony (as opposed to a royal colony).
On March 18, 1673 Berkeley sold his half of New Jersey to Quakers in England (with William Penn acting as trustee for a time) who settled the Delaware Valley region as a Quaker colony.
