John Holloway (governor) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1807, Holloway was appointed Governor of Newfoundland.
A traditionalist, Holloway reverted to the anti-settlement mentality of some past governors and forbade the use of land for cultivation.
In March 1809, the British parliament made permanent the island's courts of judicature, and re-annexed Labrador to Newfoundland, largely as a result of Holloway's lobbying.

Contests between the two were common, with governors generally exercising greater power in the northern colonies and assemblies wielding more power in the south.
Governors also had the power to make appointments, and thus to pack the government with their followers.
Colonists tended to view their elected assemblies as defenders against the king, against Parliament, and against colonial governors, who were attempting to increase their power at the expense of popular liberty.

The ablest colonial governor of the time, William Shirley of Massachusetts, was, however, strongly in favor of a parliamentary union coupled with parliamentary taxation of the colonies.

Uncommon Sense - Trevor Burnard, The dog that did not bark
The start and end dates in the book’s title are 1500 and 1800, neither of which is, in and of itself, of any significance, as opposed to 1492 or 1776 or 1807 or 1815.
Colonial history as written in the first half of the twentieth century was not much more concerned with dates than is history as written in the second half.
One reason, of course, is that America’s colonial past has been blessed (or cursed, depending on your perspective) by being full of years when not much happened.

The Growth of Libertarian Thought in America. by Murray Rothbard
The first half of the eighteenth century saw an increasing political stalemate between the contending forces, now generally consisting of Crown and privileged oligarchy as against the rest of the population, This period of quiescence was matched in the mother country, in institutions as well as in thought and opinion.
The far greater democracy in the bulk of the American colonies than in England was a reflection of this breakdown.
One basic influence on colonial American thought was the fact that two contrasting traditions emerged from its Protestant and Puritan heritage.

In 1724 Rev. Thomas Hughes reported the school as endowed with 500 acres of land, three slaves, and a number of cattle; and the master then was George Ranson.
This supposition is confirmed by the fact that, eleven years before (in 1660), the colonial Assembly had passed an act for the founding of “a college and free schoole,” to which object Berkeley, the council, and the members of the General Assembly all subscribed.
James Blair, a Scotch clergyman, recently arrived in the colony, assumed the initiative, and Governor Francis Nicholson and his council, as well as the Convention of Clergy held at Jamestown in 1690, enthusiastically adopted the proposals drawn by him for a college, to be recommended to the next General Assembly.
