	Land, Agriculture-Mitchell
		What was described as a valuable colony was given up because of the number of proprietors, disagreements and disputes among them, their inability to settle the matter of quitrents, or annual land use fees, in South Carolina, and their fear that they would lose the colony in case of invasion by Spain.
		Both Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia and Moseley recommended to Carteret that his one-eighth part of Carolina be set up as a single district and that the northern boundary be the Virginia-North Carolina line, since that was the only boundary in the entire province that had been fixed.
		The 1773 assembly reminded Henry Eustace McCulloh, the agent of the colony, that the Granville land office had been closed to the “inconvenience and grievance” of the settlers in the province; McCulloh was asked to use his utmost endeavors to induce the Crown to purchase the district.

	North Carolina Governors
		North Carolina's history as an organized governing system led by a governor may be viewed in five chronological stages: the Virginia colony, the southern plantation, the Lords Proprietors, the Royal colony, and the state of North Carolina.
		A chronology of governors serving during each of these stages is listed at the bottom of the page.
		Theactions of the Virginia governor outpaced his authority under the English Crown, and the Southern Plantation and its Commander were short-lived.

	California During the Revolution
		For their part, California governors and presidial commanders found the mission priests to be a haughty lot who sometimes considered themselves superior to the military.
		Governors and commanders assumed that the soldiers would remain in California following their tours of duty and local marriages and land grants were strong inducements to this end.
		The fathers of the Mexican governors Alvarado and Pico and of the Generals Vallejo and Castro had all begun as presidials, as were the founders of the important California houses of De la Guerra, Ortega, Peralta, Valencia, Sanchez, Bernal, Alviso, Galindo, Carrillo, Moraga, and others.

	Complete List of NYS Attorneys General
		Defeated in race for Governor by Thomas Dewey in 1942.
		Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
		By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

	79.02.05: The African and the Pequot in Colonial America
		In colonial times the Africans were the smallest and most limited cultural group (mostly servants), but they were able to retain a measure of autonomy in more subtle forms.
		Africans also participated in many other colonial activities: they delivered the mail between local communities; they assisted in fur trading tasks—steering the river canoes and packing the skins for shipment; they worked in forest industries; they served as artist and tradesmen.

	The Colonial Virginia Register
		He was keeper of the colonial seal and ex-offio clerk of the Council and General Court, though the duties of these offices were actually performed by the titular clerks of the respective bodies.
		The Councillors were the Governor's advisers in executive matters, and patents, etc., are stated to be issued with their "advice and consent." They constituted the General Court -the supreme court of the Colony and also had legislative functions as members of the upper house of the Assembly, corresponding somewhat to our senate.
		The colonial almanacs (which were always published late in the year before that whose date they bear-as is the case now) contain lists which have in the main been found to be very accurate, of the members of the House in existence at the time when the almanac was printed.

		For those devoted to a single period, the diversity of The Colonial Chronicle can be frustrating; a student of the French army in Canada in 1759 might not have much interest in an article on the Sturbridge Village militia of the 1830s.
		The author uses the term "Maryland loyalists" to refer to those citizens of the colony who were loyal to the crown, and "Maryland Loyalists" to refer to the regiment which was formed as part of the British Army in America; the book deals equally with both of these subjects.
		Populations of the colonies and Canada are given, broken down in several ways, along with the number of newspapers and colleges.

		The Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda is appointed by the FCO and approved by The Queen (on the advice of the British Government in London) after consultation with the Premier of Bermuda.
		The Governor since April 2002 is Sir John Vereker, 59 in 2004, most recently Permanent Secretary of the Department of International Development in London.
