 POL 303
Even though most state constitutions declare that it is the duty of the governor to see to it that laws are faithfully executed, the application of this depends on the degree of control which the governor exercises over subordinates, and this in turn reflects the governor's ability to appoint and remove lesser officials.
Some powers and duties are conferred on the governor by the state constitution; others are thrust on the governor by the legislature; and finally, the governor may accrue some power through personal or political leadership.
If the governor is the leader of his party, and he usually is, and that party controls the legislature, he may have considerable say over who will chair committees.

To profit from the development of his colony, collect quitrents and fines, and recover land from settlers without heirs or who failed to meet the terms of their contracts, each proprietor required a system of territorial administration.

The United States traces its national origin to the declaration by thirteen British colonies in 1776 that they were free and independent states.
During the 19th century, many new states were added to the original thirteen as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.
This tripartite system is duplicated, with variations, (such as elected governors instead of a president) at the state level.

 Encyclopedia: List of French monarchs
Most medieval historians would argue that the existence of France proper did not begin until the advent of the Capetian Dynasty in 987, or, at the very earliest, with the establishment of the Kingdom of Western Francia at the Treaty of Verdun in 843.
Initially, this had some basis in fact - Henry VI of England had been recognized by his grandfather Charles VI as heir to the French throne under the terms of the 1420 Treaty of Troyes, and most of Northern France was under English control until 1435.
This is a list of British monarchs, that is, the monarchs on the thrones of some of the various kingdoms that have existed on, or incorporated, the island of Great Britain, namely: England (united with Wales from 1536) up to 1707; Scotland up to 1707; The Kingdom of Great Britain...

Because no person could be elected to a Connecticut colonial government position at the spring elections unless his name was on the list of twenty candidates developed the previous fall, a special law was enacted that permitted a previously unlisted candidate for governor to be elected.
As Governor, he strove to end Connecticut's opposition to some of England's colonial policies and was instrumental in increasing the colony's involvement in military actions against the French and Indians in Queen Anne's War.
New London had provided governors for the Colony of Connecticut for 44 of the previous 67 years, and Saltonstall was buried with an impressive ceremony in the Ancient Cemetery.

The basic doctrine of land tenure throughout the colonial period was that all land was held immediately by the King, to be dispensed by the royal officials of the colonial government in accordance with the wishes of the King.
The popular conception of colonial Virginia is that most of the land in the colony was owned by a few wealthy planters, of Cavalier descent, who maintained huge plantations worked by large numbers of indentured servants and/or slaves.
In colonial Virginia and North Carolina, all justices of the peace, vestrymen, officers in the militia and other appointed officials of the King were required to take a series of four oaths as a condition of appointment.

He led a colony of Frenchmen, in 1562, to what is now South Carolina, built a small fort on a spot which he called Port Royal, and left it in charge of thirty men while he went back to France for more colonists.
By the 1606 charter the colony was limited to 100 miles along the seaboard and 100 miles west from the coast.
As the colonies were growing in population, and as the charters of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia, and Carolina gave them great stretches of territory in the Mississippi valley, it was inevitable that, sooner or later, a bitter contest for possession of the country should take place between the French and the English in America.

By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." The only drawbacks are that (1) Thompsett's lists are, indeed, genealogical, which means it is sometimes hard to find unrelated rulers in a succession, and (2) the entries are very summary, without any explanation of may be happening as, for instance, domains are divided among multiple heirs.
However, both Tompsett and WW-Person list Stephen Count of Champagne, Meaux, and Troyes (Tompsett twice, as son of both Herbert the Elder and Herbert, Count of Meaux, identified as "Herbert the Younger").
