  North Carolina Governors
North Carolina's history as an organized governing system led by a governor may be viewed in five chronological stages: the Virginia colony, the southern plantation, the Lords Proprietors, the Royal colony, and the state of North Carolina.
A chronology of governors serving during each of these stages is listed at the bottom of the page.
Theactions of the Virginia governor outpaced his authority under the English Crown, and the Southern Plantation and its Commander were short-lived.

Governor King accordingly designated, on 19 April, 1803, Father Dixon to take charge of the Catholic congregation, and under this government supervision the first Mass was said by him in Sydney, on Sunday, 15 May, 1803.
Governor Macquire, on whom he called the next day for permission to exercise his ministry, bluntly announced his determination not to allow any Popish missionary to intrude on this Protestant colony, and ordered him to depart on the ship that brought him.
Succeeding governors of Canada, especially Haldiman and Craig, were less accommodating to Catholics than Carleton, and it was not till the diplomatic and uncompromising Bishop Plessis, one of the illustrious figures in Canadian history, took up the struggle for the liberties of the Church that Catholics began to breathe freely.

Those who maintained the faith that the British government would rectify colonial complaints through the legal legislative system were contemptuously dubbed "Tories" by their more aggressive "Whig" opponents—terms drawn from seventeenth-century English politics.
In the subsequent Irish Rebellion of 1798, "ultra loyalists" were those most opposed to the United Irishmen, who wanted an independent Irish Republic.

The governor was the probate authority and all colonial probate files are in the state capitol in Trenton.
During the colonial period, the governor had the power to perform and issue marriage licenses; however it was not uncommon for people to get married without going through any official ceremony or getting a license.
Early Virginia court books may show a list of tithables, granting of ordinary licenses, appointment of persons to survey a road, recommendations to the governor for the appointment of tobacco inspectors, an order for a man to pay for the support of an illegitimate child, among other things.

The records were maintained by the Colonial Secretary and transferred to the new Secretary of State in 1783.
Most are in the handwriting of, and signed by, Governor Clinton; a few are in the handwriting of DeWitt Clinton, his nephew and secretary from 1790 to 1795.
The census lists the names of heads of families and statistics on family structure and economic status for each individual and family unit.

Governor Andros was imprisoned and the government overthrown on April 18, 1689, shortly after the news of the English Glorious Revolution reached Boston.
The governor was the commander-in-chief of the militia and appointed all military officials; he had the right to summon, adjourn, and prorogue the General Court.
The William and Mary Charter was modified in 1725 by the Explanatory Charter, issued by King George I. Further strengthening the position of the governor, this charter gave the governor the sole power to adjourn the House of Representatives and the right to negate the House's choice of their speaker.

VIII (1934-45) begins with the Treaties of Sana’a and Taif in 1934 and is followed by documents on the institution of Aden Colony in 1937, its social and economic affairs prior to World War II, the Islands and the effects of World War II on the Colony and Protectorate.

XIII (1957-58) deals with the Anglo-Yemeni frontier, the affairs of the Colony and Protectorate and the Islands, Aden’s becoming the headquarters of the British forces in the Middle East (1957-58) and the Adenisation Committee.

There are several lists: a list of property owners and pens, sugar estates and plantations, arranged by parishes; a business directory listed by trades; a list of persons living in Kingston and St. Andrew; a list of persons living outside that area; and a list of Ministers arranged by denomination.
List One consisted of 145 families, for a total of 347 individuals,described as "white families and artificers." At the end of the page you will find a report taken from the Journals of the House of Commons in 1753 concerning the efficacy of the Acts.

The Masons were firmly entrenched in the eastern colonies, but since 95% of the population identified themselves as Christians, they had to modify their philosophies to include Christian teachings.
Among its members were Governor DeWitt Clinton, Horace Greeley(politician and editor of the New York Daily Tribune), Charles Dana, and Clinton Roosevelt(the ancestor of Franklin D. Roosevelt).
In Washington's response, dated September 25, 1798, he wrote: "I have heard much about the nefarious and dangerous plan and doctrines of the Illuminati," but went on to say that he didn't believe that they had become involved in the lodges.

 Cartography and Exploration-Cummings
On November 14, 1732, Governor Burrington wrote to the Commissioners for Trade and Plantations that he was enclosing detailed drafts of Beaufort and Ocracoke and had already sent them one of Cape Fear River.
Governor Burrington complained that the situation fostered the evasion of customs duties and resulted in material loss of revenue to the province.
Marsden was a minister of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in the Cape Fear River parish; Carolina was part of the diocese of the Bishop of London.

The social and romantic sides of colonial Haiti also make strong showings in the collection of correspondence, as male friends exchange advice on wooing women on the island and several women profess their love for Michel Marsaudon, as well as their anger at being rejected.
Carondelet was one of the most noteworthy colonial governors of Louisiana, most importantly building a canal which aided to port of New Orleans which still bears his name.
Printed documents regarding Haitian trade dated 1798 and 1802 are the only items created after that date and give reasonable evidence that Marsaudon or whoever kept the archive remained active in trade with the island for at least eight years.

The New York General Assembly dates to 1683 when proprietary governor Thomas Dongan appointed representatives to advise him on governing the province.
The Assembly's right to raise monies for governmental operations (not the least of which was the governor's salary and expenses) fostered a tension and also a working relationship between the two polar interests that culminated in the so-called American Revolutions of 1775-83.

The Supreme Court, as organized in 1778, consisted till 1788, of the three judges of the High Court of Chancery, the three judges of the General Court, and the three judges of the Admiralty Court.

 Various Cape of Good Hope Land Grants and related histories.
They never changed their policy but Governor Simon van der Stel (1691 to 1699) was able to significantly increase the food output by introducing cattle, sheep and fowls (chickens) and show that Individuals farming for themselves were more productive than communal farming..
All the Governors before van der Stel, including Crudorp, were dismissed for violating their policy and issuing land grants to individuals.
There is a colourless embossed seal of the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope at the bottom of the document and the watermark of the Cape of Good Hope.
