List of Governors of Massachusetts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Governor of Massachusetts is the chief executive of the Commonwealth, and is supported by a number of subordinate officers.
The title of "His Excellency" is a throwback to the executives of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Province of New England, and Royal Colony of Massachusetts, all of whom as royal appointees were afforded this title.
The governor also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth's armed forces, a position the power of which has declined as the states of the United States have become less individual nations and more subnational units.

 Land, Agriculture-Mitchell
What was described as a valuable colony was given up because of the number of proprietors, disagreements and disputes among them, their inability to settle the matter of quitrents, or annual land use fees, in South Carolina, and their fear that they would lose the colony in case of invasion by Spain.
Both Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia and Moseley recommended to Carteret that his one-eighth part of Carolina be set up as a single district and that the northern boundary be the Virginia-North Carolina line, since that was the only boundary in the entire province that had been fixed.
The 1773 assembly reminded Henry Eustace McCulloh, the agent of the colony, that the Granville land office had been closed to the “inconvenience and grievance” of the settlers in the province; McCulloh was asked to use his utmost endeavors to induce the Crown to purchase the district.

Steiner, Rev. Thomas Bray and His American Libraries
As is shown by the interesting lists from old inventories, which President L. Tyler is publishing in the William and Mary College Quarterly, many of the colonial mansions along the banks of the James and the Rappahannock possessed considerable and varied collections of books.
They were the governor, councillors, chief justice, secretary, speaker, and attorney-general of the province, the members of the precinct court, and ten other citizens mentioned by name, whose places should be filled by co-optation.
The people of the colonies seem to have taken comparatively little interest in adding to the libraries by the purchase of “good and godly books,” and as those already in the libraries became antiquated and worn out, the libraries lost their usefulness and mouldered away in the corners.

Religious Enfranchisement and Roman Catholics in Eighteenth-Century Newfoundland
Twice he was the governor of the island, and in both instances he served during times of war when he had to fear an invasion by the enemy.
Governor Edwards was able to prevent the proclamation of religious liberty in Newfoundland because, in the absence of effective political representation and a legislature, he was responsible only to himself and to the distant authorities in England.
Governor Edwards, having no hesitation to administer the law in Newfoundland, had been challenged in England in 1780 by dissatisfied merchants, the result of which was an arbitration settlement but also a recognition on the part of the judge that the governor's actions had been illegal.

Ironically, while the fl presence in colonial America introduced a new set of restrictions concerning the English law of arms and the militia, it helped strengthen the view that the security of the state was best achieved through the arming of all free citizens.
