		When Governor Gore promptly appointed his own secretary to this position, people in the province were disappointed, for they knew the governor would exercise close control over the agent, monitor his actions and interpret his reports to suit the interests of the governor and not necessarily those of the colony.
		Governors were selected, not because of any special aptitude for or knowledge about the colony, but for reasons usually unrelated to the interests of the colony to which they were being sent.
		Military governors had few political or diplomatic skills, and they held the extreme views of their aristocratic Tory class which was that the finer things in life should be only for those with prestige, property and influence.

	North Carolina Governors
		North Carolina's history as an organized governing system led by a governor may be viewed in five chronological stages: the Virginia colony, the southern plantation, the Lords Proprietors, the Royal colony, and the state of North Carolina.
		A chronology of governors serving during each of these stages is listed at the bottom of the page.
		Theactions of the Virginia governor outpaced his authority under the English Crown, and the Southern Plantation and its Commander were short-lived.

	The American Revolution
		As a natural consequence, the royal governors were continually trying to do things which the people would not let them do, they were in a chronic state of angry warfare with their assemblies and they were incessant in their complaints to the Lords of Trade.
		To bring all the colonies together under a single viceroy would, it was thought, diminish seriously the power of each local assembly, while at the same time such a union would no doubt make the military strength of the colonies much more available in case of war.
		Of the royal governors who were anxious to see the colonies united on any terms, none opposed the plan except Delancey of New York, who wished to reserve to the governors a veto upon all elections of representatives to the Grand Council.

	Tyler, Education in Colonial Virginia. III. Free Schools
		This supposition is confirmed by the fact that, eleven years before (in 1660), the colonial Assembly had passed an act for the founding of “a college and free schoole,” to which object Berkeley, the council, and the members of the General Assembly all subscribed.
		This free school had not materialized as expected, and it was certainly its failure that was uppermost in Berkeley’s mind when he said, in 1671, that there were no free schools in Virginia.
		James Blair, a Scotch clergyman, recently arrived in the colony, assumed the initiative, and Governor Francis Nicholson and his council, as well as the Convention of Clergy held at Jamestown in 1690, enthusiastically adopted the proposals drawn by him for a college, to be recommended to the next General Assembly.

		The only drawbacks are that (1) Thompsett's lists are, indeed, genealogical, which means it is sometimes hard to find unrelated rulers in a succession, and (2) the entries are very summary, without any explanation of may be happening as, for instance, domains are divided among multiple heirs.
		However, both Tompsett and WW-Person list Stephen Count of Champagne, Meaux, and Troyes (Tompsett twice, as son of both Herbert the Elder and Herbert, Count of Meaux, identified as "Herbert the Younger").
		While French colonialism may have had less of the racism and racial separateness that now seem characteristic of British practice, it nevertheless was rather more intent on imposing French "civilization" and less tolerant of taking "no" for an answer -- while the British condescended to allow quaint native customs and institutions to survive, within limits.

		The list of governors in the 1998-1999 Texas Almanac gives his term of office at 1787-1788, and notes that from 1788 to 1789, the office of governor was suppressed, and the area was ruled by a presidial captain.
		According to MUNOZ, MANUEL, The Handbook of Texas Online, Elguezabal became interim governor in 1797 because Munoz was ill, and continued in this post following Munoz' death in July of 1799.

	Alexander Hamilton
