When Governor Bernard was appealed to for a charter in the name of the crown without any act on the part of the assembly, he was about to accede to the request when the cry was raised that he had not the requisite power.
The right of proprietary governors to incorporate was presumably similar to that of the royal governors, except as the proprietary patents from the crown may have contained limitations on the proprietary's power at this point.
These colonies were themselves corporations existing by virtue of crown charters.(64*) Their powers of legislation were technically based, at bottom, upon their right and power as corporations to pass by-laws for their better government.

Newfoundland received a colonial assembly in 1832 which was and still is referred to as the House of Assembly.

The Governor of Virginia is forbidden by the Constitution of the Commonwealth from serving consecutive terms (the only U.S. state in which gubernatorial incumbents are forbidden from running for governor); however, several governors have served multiple non-consecutive terms.
In Virginia, governors and lieutenant governors are elected separately, so the two can be of different political parties and can be political rivals.

However, the governor at once hastened to the frontier; by his orders Kaffirland was invaded; but every arrangement was so ill made that our troops were repulsed; twice our baggage-waggons were cut off; and the victorious Kaffirs, in their turn, invaded the colony.
In 1842 the free population of that colony amounted to 37,000, and on the average of the four years ending with 1844, the expenditure, exclusive of immigration, was £161,000, or at the enormous rate of £4 6s.

Governor Berkeley, who had been Governor since 1642, had Charles II proclaimed as King and invited him to assume the administration of Virginia.
According to the Act all English possessions could allow only English or Colonial vessels entrance to their ports; certain articles, produced in the colonies, such as sugar and tobacco, were known as "enumerated" goods, and were to be shipped to England only.
The charters of these two colonies were so liberal that they continued to be the fundamental law of Connecticut and Rhode Island to 1818 and 1842.

Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
Until 1702 he was appointed by the governor, after which he was commissioned by the Crown.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.
