There was on the 1st of July, 1858, of Treasury notes issued by authority of the act of December 23, 1857, unredeemed, the sum of $19,754,800, making the amount of actual indebtedness at that date $54,910,777.66.
Since that year it has annually increased, until in 1858 it has reached more than eight millions and a quarter, and for the service of 1859 it is estimated that it will amount to more than $10,000,000.

Colonial personnel in Africa prided themselves on interior knowledge, but they took their general orders from metropolitan officials living far away, whether in Mafeking and Cape Town, or the Foreign Office in London and the colonial ministry in Paris.
Such examples again show that the role of images in the colonial project does not emerge from the images themselves, but rather lies in their appropriation into structures of distribution and consumption.

In Colony of North Carolina Volume 1 and Volume 2 Margaret M. Hofmann has abstracted land patents for more than 15,000 tracts of land granted to settlers in NC by the Crown in the 30 - some years NC was a Crown Colony.
The three census works listed above are in original order with all information included as it appears in the enumerations, indexed (1850 schedules for the county and those for population, slave, and agriculture are indexed).
Accompanying are tax lists for the county showing township of taxable property, number of polls, number of slaves, and evaluation in 1830.
