The word Wakeman is defined in Worcester's dictionary as "the title of the chief magistrate of the town of Ripon, Yorkshire, England." At Ripon the title descended from father to son and gave rise to the surname Wakeman.
He was chosen deputy of the New Haven colony in 1642, and treasurer in 1656-1661, when he was made magistrate, but died before taking oath of office.
His colonial descent has gained him membership in the Society of Colonial Governors, and the patriotic order Sons of the Revolution.

Governor Andros was imprisoned and the government overthrown on April 18, 1689, shortly after the news of the English Glorious Revolution reached Boston.
The governor was the commander-in-chief of the militia and appointed all military officials; he had the right to summon, adjourn, and prorogue the General Court.
The William and Mary Charter was modified in 1725 by the Explanatory Charter, issued by King George I. Further strengthening the position of the governor, this charter gave the governor the sole power to adjourn the House of Representatives and the right to negate the House's choice of their speaker.

The Crabtree Creek section, renamed for conservationist governor William B. Umstead in 1955, was united with the Reedy Creek section as Umstead State Park in 1966.
It was the first area in the city to be listed in the National Register, and is Raleigh's oldest and largest local historic district.
However, its use as a school was not entirely assured until 1872, when a joint-stock company made up mainly of members of the Presbyterian Church funded a curriculum of "three courses of instruction: Primary, Preparatory and Collegiate." Growth was slow, but by 1882 there were more than 200 students enrolled.

A year later at Governor Morton's request, he was sent to Indiana to prosecute members of the Knights of the Golden Circle and later took part in the cases growing out of the Chicago conspiracy to liberate the Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas.

Lists of White Families introduced into Jamaica from 1734 to 1753 under several Acts that were passed in England to encourage settlers to move to the island.
List One consisted of 145 families, for a total of 347 individuals,described as "white families and artificers." At the end of the page you will find a report taken from the Journals of the House of Commons in 1753 concerning the efficacy of the Acts.
