The state's first colonial capital, it was established in the late 17th century and incorporated in 1722.
Meticulously reconstructed in the 1950's, the original Tryon Palace was built between 1767 and 1770 for colonial Governor Tryon as the first permanent capitol of North Carolina.

 Complete List of NYS Attorneys General
Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
Until 1702 he was appointed by the governor, after which he was commissioned by the Crown.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

 Colorado - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The state was named after the Spanish word "Colorado," which means "reddish colored" that presumably refers to the red sandstone formations in the area or reddish brown color of the Colorado River.
Colorado is made up primarily of transplanted citizens, and this is illustrated by the fact that the state has not had a native-born governor since 1975 (when John David Vanderhoof left office) and has not elected one since 1958, in the person of Stephen L.R. McNichols.
Bob Beauprez, considered a highly conservative politician, is running for the governor's seat in 2006 on the Republican ticket.

 A Brief History of America
The British felt that the colonies existed for the benefit of the mother country and this attitude was bound to cause resentment.
The colonies were printing their own money because of a shortage of currency but the act banned the issue of paper money in the American colonies (and so hindered trade).
Colonial assemblies denounced it and in October 1765 a number of colonies sent delegates to a 'Stamp act Congress' to organise resistance.

 The Burnett Family
William Burnet, colonial governor who was born at The Hague during his father's temporary residence there, was the son of Gilbert Burnet, the celebrated Bishop of Salisbury.
Union soldier, lawyer was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Henry and Nancy Jones Burnett, and a descendant of William Burnet, colonial governor of New York.
A year later at Governor Morton's request, he was sent to Indiana to prosecute members of the Knights of the Golden Circle and later took part in the cases growing out of the Chicago conspiracy to liberate the Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas.

 Rhode Island Office of the Secretary of State
From 1647 to 1663, the colony was governed by a President, with four Assistants.
On June 3, 1686, King James II appointed Sir Edmund Andros to be Governor of New England, and on September 13, 1686, instructed him to demand the surrender of Rhode Island’s Royal Charter.
John Coggeshall resumed the office of Deputy Governor, but Walter Clarke did not resume the office of Governor that he had been elected to in 1686.

Lawson found in his travels through part of the colony in 1701 that visitors were housed and entertained at the cabin of the chief or headman in each town.
The colony was in demoralized condition when the war erupted: the government had neither money nor credit; trade was at a standstill; food and ammunition were scarce; the Quakers refused to fight; and the militia deserted in large numbers.
The governors of South Carolina and New York were instrumental in persuading the Catawba and the Iroquois, respectively, to end their warfare by signing the treaty of Albany in 1751.

The colonialism which the United States imposes on us and which we have suffered for 88 years, is no less burdensome, no less unjust, than that against which they poured out their blood and treasure.
Colonialism has preferred to conserve the power and perquisites of a distant bureaucracy and the control and special privileges--the fish traps--of a politically potent absentee industry.
But the keepers of Alaska's colonial status should be reminded that the 18th century colonials for long years sought merely to obtain relief from abuses, for which they--like us--vainly pleaded, before finally resolving that only independence would secure for them the "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness," which they felt was their natural right.

The governor flew the Union Jack with the badge of the colony in a laurel wreath in the centre of the St George's cross.
We further submit that the Governors of Your Majesty's Dominions in Foreign Parts, and Governors of all ranks and denomination administering the Governments of British Colonies and dependencies be authorised to fly the Union Jack with the Arms of the Badge of the Colony emblasoned in the centre thereof.
Saint Lucia: no disc; the governor wrote in 1919 that the badge was not used on the Blue Ensign, just the letters 'H.M.' in white, which stood for 'harbour master', not 'his Majesty'.

The constitution promulgated in 1950 was so inimical to the interest of the Sikhs that its leadership refused to sign the document in protest.
Their homeland is being treated as a colony and made into a vast military - cum - police camp in which Sikhs are meted out treatment incomparably worse than that given to people in occupied territories during war.
That the Governor and his Adviser swallowed it is a pointer to the state of indiscipline in the top echelons of police and indeed its supremacy over the civil administration.

 The Making Of A Statesman: 1950 1970 - Kamisese Mara
After serving (from 1950) as an Administrative Officer in the Colonial Services, Mara was elected to one of four seats on the Legislative Council of Fiji reserved for ethnic Fijians in 1953.
In 1959, Mara was appointed to the Executive Council (Fiji), and in 1963 was given responsibility as Leader of Government Business and Member for Natural Resources (officially an advisor to the Governor, but in reality roughly equivalent to a modern cabinet minister).
The Executive Council was transformed into a modern Cabinet (Fiji), and its members, who had hitherto been answerable only to the colonial List of Governors of Fiji, were made fully responsible to the Parliament (Fiji).

The only drawbacks are that (1) Thompsett's lists are, indeed, genealogical, which means it is sometimes hard to find unrelated rulers in a succession, and (2) the entries are very summary, without any explanation of may be happening as, for instance, domains are divided among multiple heirs.
However, both Tompsett and WW-Person list Stephen Count of Champagne, Meaux, and Troyes (Tompsett twice, as son of both Herbert the Elder and Herbert, Count of Meaux, identified as "Herbert the Younger").
While French colonialism may have had less of the racism and racial separateness that now seem characteristic of British practice, it nevertheless was rather more intent on imposing French "civilization" and less tolerant of taking "no" for an answer -- while the British condescended to allow quaint native customs and institutions to survive, within limits.
