Comet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Comets are believed to originate in a cloud (the Oort cloud) at large distances from the sun consisting of debris left over from the condensation of the solar nebula; the outer edges of such nebulae are cool enough that water exists in a solid (rather than gaseous) state.
Comets are now designated by the year of their discovery followed by a letter indicating the half-month of the discovery and a number indicating the order of discovery (a system similar to that already used for asteroids), so that the fourth comet discovered in the second half of February 2006 would be designated 2006 D4.
He rejected the ideas of several earlier philosophers that comets were planets, or at least a phenomenon related to the planets, on the grounds that while the planets confined their motion to the circle of the Zodiac, comets could appear in any part of the sky.

Comet Kohoutek (C/1973 E1), which was widely predicted to be the "comet of the century" in 1973, did manage to become a naked-eye object but never lived up to its publicity.
Long-period comets may arrive from any direction, their elongated orbits randomly oriented to the orbits of the planets, while the short-period comets are confined closer to the ecliptic.
Comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) was, in the words of Brooks Observatory comet expert John Bortle, "one of the grandest of the millennium." It was discovered visually by Japanese amateur Yuji Hyakutake when at a distance of 2.0 AU — and only 55 days before its closest approach to Earth (March 25, 1996, 0.102 AU).

As comets orbit in the solar system it is only as they close in on the Sun that they take on the familiar look that we expect comets to have.
Given below is a list of Comets that are presently visible and the date on which they are closest to the sun, this is the date around which they will be at their brightest and most interesting.
On the 13 of May 2006 the comet will pass 0.0735 au from Earth (the moon is at 0.0026 au) as the comet has already split into 3 smaller parts it is not known if the comet will still exist.

Comets often have two tails: A "plasma tail," which is made up of charged ions, and a "dust tail" which is made up of dust.
The bright comets that we sometimes see in the night sky are those that come close to the Sun, and most of the light that we see from the comet is really reflected sunlight.
The time for a comet to complete an orbit (called its "period") can be hundreds or even thousands of years, so that most people don't see the same comet more than once in their lifetime.

 Periodic Comet Names List
This includes all numbered periodic comets (those observed on at least two apparitions) and unnumbered comets whose orbital periods have been determined to be less than 200 years.
The original purpose of this list was to provide a database of unique names and designations for periodic comets that will simplify searches in the PDS system.
In cases where multiple comets were discovered after the CBAT and the Minor Planet Center (MPC) stopped using these numbers, they have been added, either in the order of the comet's identification as periodic or when it has been given an official name (whichever came second).

This list of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters was compiled by Charles Messier (1730-1817) and his colleague, Pierre Mechain.
Messier was interested in finding comets, and this list catalogs objects that proved not to be comets.
Of these, 33 were identified by later observers as galaxies, 55 as star clusters, and 11 as true nebulae; the 4 others are a double star; an asterism; a patch of the Milky Way; and a duplicate observation.
