Barcelona is well supplied with inland communication by rail, and the traffic of its streets is largely facilitated by tramway lines running from the port as far as Gracia and the other chief suburbs.
Consuls represented Barcelona at the principal commercial centres on or near the Mediterranean; and the city was among the first communities to adopt the practice of marine insurance.
But the union of Castile and Aragon in 1479 favoured other cities of Spain at the expense of Barcelona, whose commercial supremacy was transferred to the ports of western Spain by the discovery of America in 1492.

One of the earliest instances of the term ecclesia cathedralis is said to occur in the acts of the council of Tarragona in 516.
Originally the bishop and cathedral clergy formed a kind of religious community, which, in no true sense a monastery, was nevertheless often called a monasterium.
In these early communities the clergy often lived apart in their own dwellings, and were not infrequently married.

Chapter 62 lays down that precedence in the community shall be determined by the date of admission, merit of life, or the appointment of the abbot.
It is only another example of the family idea that pervaded the entire Rule, by means of which the members of the community are bound together by a family tie, and each takes upon himself the obligation of persevering in his monastery until death, unless sent elsewhere by his superiors.
It is true that as communities became rich and consequently less dependent upon their own labours for support, the primitive fervour for the Rule diminished, and for this reason charges of corruption and absolute departure from monastic ideals have been made against monks.

In Spanish it is customary to refer to la seo (the see).
At Strasbourg and many places in Germany, and in many imposing churches of England, the Cathedral is called Münster (''monasterium''), (English Minster) because Some cathedrals were served by canons living in community.

Current research is exploring the effect of removals on stable communities generated from community assembly models, as well as the possible evolutionary significance of these topologies.
We conjecture that the conflict between the natural tendency towards higher diversity due to immigration and the ecosystem level constraints derived from increasing number of links, leaves the system poised at a critical (marginal) boundary separating stable from unstable communities, where large fluctuations are expected to occur.
In spite of the typically local caracter of their communication (a given ant only gathers information from nearest nestmates) we clearly appreciate the formation of long-range structures which have nothing to do with a centralized, hierarchical control like the ones used in human organizations.
