The precursor of modern RTS games was The Ancient Art of War from Evryware (distributed by Brøderbund) in 1984, followed by Herzog Zwei for the Sega Genesis in 1989, and Cryo's Dune, an adventure game with some RTS elements, in 1992.
In the past some traditional strategy gamers regarded RTS games as "cheap imitations" of turn-based games because of the tendency of RTS games to devolve into "clickfests", in which the player who was faster with the mouse generally won, because they could give orders to their units at a faster rate.
It is noteworthy, however, that due to the games being shorter because of the faster pace of the game and absence of turn switching pauses, RTS games are far more suitable for Internet play than turn-based games; this is indubitably an important reason for their popularity.

Modern computer games can handle a wide range of hardware, and since the needed display resoultion is so low on consoles, even their limited capabilites in terms of CPU power and RAM doesn't stop computer games from being ported.
Computer game developers have, especially in the past, spent significant effort towards supporting additional hardware and testing their implementations only to find players whose systems should be able to run a game yet cannot.
Video game manufacturers usually exercise tight control over the games that are made available on their systems, so unusual or special-interest games are more likely to appear on general-purpose computers.

These games are often more dark, almost like horror in design and art, and the characters featuring in these games are rendered or drawn in a more realistic way according to western styles.

A computer game is not necessarily a video game, or vice versa; for instance a text-based role-playing game could be played verbally by a blind person, which is clearly no longer a "video" game, and the first generation of video games, such as Pong, used dedicated electronic circuitry not even remotely resembling a computer.
Computer games will typically feature a wider assortment of direct controls exploiting the full computer keyboard, while video games tend to use more layers of menus, or motion sequences (up-up-down-left, etc) via the game controller.
Video game manufacturers usually exercise tight control over the games that are made available on their systems, so unusual or special-interest games are more likely to only ever appear as games on general-purpose computers.

The world's top computer game websites
The usual distinction today is rather subtle; a game will be a "computer game" if it is played on a personal computer (such as Apple Mac, PC, Amiga or Commodore 64), but a "video game" if it is played on a computer that is specialized for game playing (such as video game consoles).
Because of hardware differences, versions of the same game played on a computer will typically feature a wider assortment of direct controls exploiting the full computer keyboard, while video games tend to use more layers of sub-menus, or motion sequences (up-up-down-left, etc) via the game controller.
The most important distinction between computer and video games arises from the fact that computers tend to have high resolution monitors, optimized for viewing at close range by one person, while home video game consoles use a much lower-resolution commercial television as their output device, optimized for viewing at a greater distance.
