A Trip to the Camps (visiting Nazi concentration and death camps)
The camp is easy to reach by train, which is one reason the Nazis put it there, to centralize their systematic exploitation, robbery, and murder of Europe's Jews.
The first two camps are open to the public as a museum, with educational displays housed in Auschwitz I. I was glad to see so many people at Auschwitz I, but I was saddened by the children running inside the rebuilt gas chamber and crematorium I.
Unlike the concentration camps, the death camps in Poland like Chelmo and Treblinka were built to kill the greatest number of people in the shortest amount of time.

 Majdanek Concentration Camp - History
In sharp contrast to the extermination camp at Treblinka, which is in a wooded area as remote as Ted Kaczynkski's Montana cabin, the Majdanek concentration camp is situated in a major urban area, four kilometers from the city center of Lublin, and can be easily reached by trolley car.
People driving past the camp, while it was in operation, had a completely unobstructed view, being able to see the tall brick chimney of the crematorium wafting smoke from the top of a slope not far away, and the gas chamber building which is a few yards from a busy street.
At the Majdanek camp, there is a large field of grass near the street, in the middle of which stands a lone white stucco house, the former dwelling of the Camp Commandant.

Plaszow Concentration Camp - shown in Schindler's List
If it were not for the Stephen Spielberg movie, Schindler's List, the story of the Nazi concentration camp at Plaszow, located 10 kilometers outside the city center of Krakow, might never have become known to the average American.
At this point, Plaszow was still not a concentration camp, but a penal labor camp under the jurisdiction of local SS men in the General Government, as the central section of occupied Poland was called by the Nazis.
The novel Schindler's List explains that executions and floggings at all of the concentration camps had to be approved by the central administrative office in Berlin, but not at the labor camps.

Inside the concentration camps there were Jewish police, prisoners known as "kapos." In return for special privileges, kapos forced other Jews to obey Nazi orders, just as the Jewish police had done in the ghettos.
In the concentration camps, however, there were also German guards (and sometimes Polish and Ukranian guards) always present, ready and willing to beat or shoot anyone who did not obey orders.

Civilian internment camps or prison camps, more commonly known as concentration camps, have been the subject of much rumor and speculation during the past few years in America.
The concept of mass internment camps was implemented during the decade of the 1930's when the idea was either integrated into national security planning or put to actual use in the world's three socialistic experiments - the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and the United States under Roosevelt.
