I think the definition of a concept album is this: Rather than use the vinyl to record 8 to 12 seperate concepts, the songs,(even if they have a common theme), the band uses the vinyl as the canvas for their single concept.
If "concept album" simply means that all the songs share some theme, then *every* soundtrack is a concept album, and I'm sure it would be easy to name a boy band album where every track was about how much they love some girl.

Where as on a regular album with similar themes...those songs can stand on their own...but with a concept album...the songs still can stand on there own...but it maight be a little bit more out there unless you're already in the story.
For those of you not in the know, the difference between a rock opera and concept album is that a concept album is a collection of songs that deal with a similar theme.
The concepts behind each are very interesting and I could listen to any of these all the way through without being bored or wanting to turn the CD off.

The data is downloadable as text files for further analysis- my primary interest in doing this study was to work out which albums and artists have been able to drive long-term sales even after record industry hype had moved on to other, newer records, and whether there were any surprises in the data.
Also available is the total list sorted as the most commercially important albums ever, and the list broken down into artist careers by adding all the albums for each artist together.
No Led Zeppelin Greatest Hits albums were really necessary- the albums themselves served that purpose, defining a new area in rock which was further explored by many- none of whom could begin to approach the sheer consistency of the list-toppers here.

Tool albums are often heavily influenced by whatever Maynard has been reading lately anyways.
Certainly a great, great album, but there isn't even a unifying theme, besides drug use, but there are plenty of albums that centered around drug use without being concept albums.

I started on album discographies because of my interest in stereo (which was mostly on albums, of course), and because there just weren't any good album discographies out there that had the kinds of information I needed.
The info you'll find here was obtained mostly by the "Brute Force Method," which involves getting and listening to the albums when possible, combing original sources of LP listings, looking through used record stores, and the like.
We have tried to list the tracks in the order they appear on the album, with a double slash ("//") indicating a change of side.
