Conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Conservatives, out of their respect for traditional, established institutions, tend to strongly identify with nationalist movements, existing governments, and its defenders: police, the military, and national poets, authors, and artists.
The archetypal free-market conservative administrations of the late 20th century -- the Margaret Thatcher government in the UK and the Ronald Reagan government in the U.S. -- both held the unfettered operation of the market to be the cornerstone of contemporary economic conservatism.
In England, specifically, the predecessors of the conservatives tended to be supporters of the monarchy, and conversely for the predecessors to the liberals.

While the goal is arguably conservative, amending the constitution on a whim is arguably not conservative.
Classical conservatives'; opposition to sudden and radical change is almost as strong when that change comes from the right as from the left.
For example, many protectionists and anti-immigration figures are often considered to be right-wing, but cannot be described as conservative, as their views conflict with political conservatives'; desires for economic liberalism and free trade.

 Conservatives Denounce Dissent
A conservative academic group founded by Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, fired a new salvo in the culture wars by blasting 40 college professors as well as the president of Wesleyan University and others for not showing enough patriotism in the aftermath of Sept. 11.
Lynne Cheney, who was a powerful voice for conservative intellectuals as chief of the National Endowment of the Humanities during the first Bush administration, is not an author of the new report.
The report lists 117 comments or incidents as evidence that campuses are hostile to the US government and out of step with most Americans who, according to polls, support the war in Afghanistan.

Conservatism - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Conservatism can be contrasted on the one hand to radical libertarianism or anarchism, and on the other to such statist movements as fascism and the authoritarian (as opposed to libertarian) versions of communism, and socialism.
Classical conservatives are inherently anti-ideological (some would even say anti-philosophical [2] ( http://www.nhinet.org/burke.htm)), promoting rather, as Russell Kirk explains, a steady flow of "prescription and prejudice".
A case in point is the radical so-called "democracy" of Marxism (of the USSR, Communist China, Cuba, etc.), opposed by the conservative.

Instead, the idea is to connect conservatives with each other so that we can hold meetings, support conservative publications, intervene in campaigns and issues of the day, and further develop our ideas and understanding of conservative politics.
Some conservatives may be more interested in gender issues, others in preserving the constitution, others in issues of national identity.
There is often a lot of public support for conservative ideas, but without any organisation conservatives are often unable to build up their influence or respond to issues of the day.

[A-List] Brit Conservatives call for limits in Afghanistan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
During the very poorly attended debate in the British Parliament today on the rushed decision to send 1,700 British combat troops to Afghanistan, the Conservative Party defence spokesperson called for the operation to be of short duration.
This may have been a signal of irritation that they had so little prior consultation (usually under the British constitution major issues of use of state power are decided in secret by the major parties beneath the veil of bourgeois adversarial two party democracy).
But although the British Conservatives usually like to appear more aggressively patriotic than the Labour Party, this stance signals unease about the wisdom of supporting the US in Afghanistan in this way.

Studious and conservative in dress and manners, Michael cared about ideas and politics, and his dream was to follow in the footsteps of Thurgood Marshall and become a justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Black Conservatives are generally not offered those options, so by not being offered the means to communicate with millions at a time, they are technically not as influential as those that made the list.
Black Conservatives do reach millions, I just wish they were given the same opportunities to reach America that those on the other side of the aisle do.

Social conservatives were keen on using government to promote “virtue” or eradicate “vice” (from assisted suicide to pot-smoking), a position highly attractive to a president who starts every cabinet meeting with a prayer.
Government is by its nature a knife that cuts to the left, in part because government employees tend to be on the left, in part because government programmes promote dependency.
