The Great Western Railway originated from the desire of Bristol merchants to maintain the position of their port as the second port in the country and the chief one for American trade.
The South Wales Railway, terminating at Neyland, opened in 1850 and was connected to the GWR via Brunel's ungainly Wye bridge in 1852.

In Great Britain, Isambard Brunel departed from the standard by laying a gauge of 7 ft., but ultimately it had to be abandoned, at enormous expense, because of the impossibility of running through coaches or wagons between the G.W.R. and any other system.
The first steel rails on record were laid in 1857 on the Midland Railway at Derby; they proved their value by remaining in use for sixteen years at a location where it had been necessary to renew the iron rails every three months.
The flat base of the chair helps to distribute the weight of the trains over as large an area of the sleeper as possible, and the life of the sleeper is further preserved, and the running of the trains is quietened, by the interposition of a felt pad between the chair and the timber.

 Railway Rolling Stock Industry in Canada
On March 4, 1882 the Quebec Government sold the Western Division from Montreal to Ottawa to the Canadian Pacific Railway, and on the same day sold the Eastern Division, from St. Martin Junction to Quebec, to a corporation known as the North Shore Railway, which was allied to the Grand Trunk.
The line of this railway was between Toronto and Collingwood, on Georgian Bay, and later extensions carried it from Allandale to Huntsville, and ultimately, to a connection with the C.P.R. transcontinental main line near North Bay.
In 1881 the Northern Railway amalgamated with the Hamilton & North-Western Railway as the Northern & North-Western Railways.
