The North Eastern Railway owned the largest mileage: 1757 route miles (2828 km), as compared with the North British Railway (1378 miles or 2218 km) and the Hull and Barnsley Railway, at 106.5 miles (171 km).
In partnership with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), the LNER was co-owner of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, the UK's biggest joint railway system, much of which competed with the LNER's own lines.
The company was nationalised in 1948 under the Transport Act 1947 and became part of British Railways, in part so that the severe war damage in the big, inner-city stations could be repaired more swiftly.

The coverage in Scotland was more confused and included the route from Berwick through Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk and Aberdeen via the Forth Bridge and Dundee, Aberdeen to Inverness, Edinburgh to Carlisle via Peebles and Glasgow to Fort William and hence Mallaig, but not the main line from Perth to Inverness.
Like all the new grouped companies there was a problem with who was going to occupy the highest posts in the new company (the GWR had it easy as there was one very large company and a lot of quite small ones, the other groups had all had several components of roughly equal size).
He was a North Eastern man, and it has been suggested that his dislike stemmed partly from Gresley's rejection of the work of Vincent Raven.

Whilst some locos on our "preservtion list" were preserved elsewhere, as other railways followed the lead given by the Bluebell, the railway none-the-less did obtain historic gems such as the Adams Radial Tank, Birch Grove, and the SECR P-tanks, considered second-best to a "Terrier" at first, but quickly proving their value.
South Eastern Railway O1-class 0-6-0 No 65 has been hidden from public view for the last 20 years, but has now been restored to working order at Sheffield Park, re-entering service on 5th August 1999, the centenary of the formation of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
British Railways Class 4 Tank locomotive No.80151 is the newest Brighton-built locomotive in preservation, having been built in 1957.
