Convoy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The power of a battleship in protecting a convoy was also dramatically illustrated when the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau came upon an eastbound British convoy of 41 ships, HX 106 in the North Atlantic on February 8th, 1941.
The convoy prefix indicates the route of the convoy.
The convoys are made possible partly by the relatively small geographic distances between the stable and affluent countries of Western Europe, and the areas of need in Eastern Europe and, in a few cases, North Africa and even Iraq.

Most of the Convoy were in ballast, all had sailed before in convoys and knew what was required of them in terms of station keeping, and what they might expect when the U-Boats attacked, as they always did on these journeys across the Atlantic, no matter whether one was East or West bound.
When the new day dawned, 32 ships of the convoy were together, and their escorts still trying to bring the stragglers back into the fold, gale force winds from the south west, still battering the struggling convoy vessels.
Convoy ON 180 trailing behind ONS 5 was somewhat to their north, and when mastheads were sighted on the afternoon of the 4th.

U-boat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both world wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and the United States to Europe.
When fired at a convoy, this increased the probability of a hit in case the weapon missed its primary target.
The capture of U-505 was noteworthy due to the capture of her codebooks, but somewhat unnecessary because the British already had the ability to read recent German codes.

In most of the lists from Ted the ships' names appear to be given according to the time they left port, with a few minutes between each ship, and in most cases I've kept them that way when listing all the ships at the end of each table.
