 Army Organization in the Civil War
The "Army of the Potomac" was the main Union army in the eastern theater of the war and the "Army of Northern Virginia" was the main Confederate force.
State militias were called into service, but there was a need to Federalize these units so that they could muster pay from the United States government and serve outside of state borders.
By 1863, many of the regiments in both armies had been in service since 1861 and were still composed of mostly volunteer soldiers, though the first "conscripts" or men required by state law to serve in the military defense of a state, had begun to appear in Southern units.

The Secretary of the Army, in consultation with the Chief of Staff of the Army, has agreed to submit the request for retirement of LTG Carl A. Strock, Chief of Engineers and Commander, US Army Corps of Engineers to the Secretary of Defense for approval.
The Corps helped develop a vast water resource infrastructure, initiated development of the first national parks, and linked navigable waterways together to move commerce across states.
In the 20th Century, the Corps' civil mission changed again with the adoption of more water resources development and management duties, including flood damage reduction, hydropower, recreation, water supply, shore protection, and disaster relief.

 Army Corps
The Division's final objective, a junction with 5th Army troops near the Brenner pass, was accomplished in the morning of May 4 when an advance party of the 103rd met a patrol of the 88th Infantry Division (5th US Army) near Colle Isarco in South Tyrol (south of the Brenner Pass).
The instructions defined the boundaries of XV Corps' temporary occupational sector and instructed the corps to enforce the terms of surrender, occupy its assigned sector as far south as the Salzach-Enns River Line and assume command of the sector at 1800B, 11 May 1945.
Under the guidance of German staff officers from the First German Army, which had been in the area at the time of the surrender, the German soldiers held in the PW enclosures were organized into companies, German officers were placed in charge and convoys were organized with the Germans using their own vehicles.

In order to allow the Corps and EPA to prepare and issue substantive guidance, the Wilmington District is, in accordance with guidance from our Headquarters and to the extent circumstances allow, delaying making CWA jurisdictional determinations for areas beyond the limits of traditional navigable waters (Section 10 waters) until new guidance is issued.
