ANSI standard C84.1 and Canadian CAN3-C235 specify that the nominal voltage at the output should be 120 V and allows a range of 114 to 126 V. California deliberately runs in the voltage range 114 to 120 V to reduce power consumption, however the reasoning behind such a move is debatable.

It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west (part of the border with Suriname is disputed).
French Guiana consists of two main geographical regions: a coastal strip where the majority of the people live, and dense, near-inaccessible rainforest which gradually rises to the modest peaks of the Tumac-Humac mountains along the Brazilian frontier.
The main Asian communities are the Hmong from Laos (1.5%) and Chinese (primarily from Hong Kong and Zhejiang province; 3.2%).

After numerous further conversions in the transmission and distribution network the power is finally transformed to the standard mains voltage (the voltage of "house" or "household" current in American English).
Where the stepdown is 3 phase, the output of this transformer is ususally star connected with the standard mains voltage (120V in North America and 230V in Europe) being the phase-neutral voltage.
Where the line-to-neutral voltage is a standard utilization voltage, (for example in a 240 V/415 V system) individual single-phase utility customers or loads may each be connected to a different phase of the supply.

List of countries with mains power plugs, voltages and frequencies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of countries and territories, with the plugs, voltages and frequencies they use for providing electrical power to small appliances and some major appliances.
Most places on the list are autonomous countries; however some territories that do things very differently from the countries they belong to (such as Hong Kong) are listed separately.
These almost always have a 110 V socket and a 230 V socket in the same unit, or a switch to select voltage, which are sometimes labelled as 115 V and 230 V. The G type socket often has a on-off switch on the socket.

Another possibility is to make an adaptor lead with an IEC male plug (with pins as on the cables used to connect power from older PC PSUs to monitors) and an appropriate power strip.
Some PC power supplies have a voltage switch, on the back of the case, for 110 V or 220 V — this should never be set incorrectly, and should always be checked if a PC has come from an unknown source or may have been tampered with.

From a three-phase main board both single and three-phase circuits may lead off (and in some cases also circuits with two phases (not to be confused with two-phase) and a neutral are led off).
The origin of the 50 hertz frequency used in other parts of the world is open to debate but seems likely to be a rounding off of 60 Hz to the 1-2-5-10 structure, called a set of preferred numbers, popular with metric standards.
A low frequency eases the design of low speed electric motors, particularly for hoisting, crushing and rolling applications, and commutator-type traction motors for applications such as railways, but also causes a noticeable flicker in incandescent lighting and objectionable flicker of fluorescent lamps.

A device at 120 V draws twice as much current as a device with the same power draw at 240 V. A 3000 W electric dryer requires 12.5 A at 240 V or 25 A at 120 V. The end result is that wiring must be larger, and each outlet supplies less power.

Frequencies between 16 2/3 Hz and 133 Hz were used on different systems, with lower frequencies favoured where loads were primarily composed of motors, and higher frequencies preferred to reduce lighting flicker.
Other frequencies were somewhat common in the first half of the 20th century, and remain in use in isolated cases today, often tied to the 60 Hz system via a rotary converter or static inverter frequency changer.
To illustrate these concepts, consider the 240 V AC mains used in the UK (it should be noted that the UK is now officially 230 V +10% −6% but in reality voltages are still closer to 240 V than 230 V in most cases).

The voltages listed here are the “nominal” figures reported to be in use at most residential or commercial sites in the country or area named.
Not all areas of a country may use all types of plugs listed for that country, since there may be regional differences based on the power system in a certain area.
Plug type F can sometimes be used but with reservation because in many places the mains outlet will not allow to connect such plug as the outlets have smaller hole diameters than F-plug pins.

POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In mechanics, the ''gravitational potential difference'' between two points on Earth is related to the energy that would be required to move a unit mass from one point to the other against the Earth's gravitational field.
In electrical engineering, the ''electrical potential difference'' ('voltage') between two points is the energy that would be required to move a unit of electrical charge from one point to the other against the electrostatic field that is present.
In simpler language, this is to say that power is energy emitted in a fixed length of time divided by the length of the time interval.

Potential difference, electrical potential and electromotive force are measured in volts, leading to the commonly used term '''voltage''' and the symbol ''V'' (sometimes ''E'' is used for voltage).
If one thinks of an electrical circuit in analogy to water circulating in a network of pipes, driven by pumps in the absence of gravity, then the potential difference corresponds to the hydrostatic pressure difference between two points.
Voltage is a convenient way of quantifying the ability to do work without having to specify the amount of charge (the number of electrons or other particles) involved.
