 MARC Code List for Countries
The list was originally compiled in 1967/68 in collaboration with a number of agencies and the Library of Congress MARC Pilot Project participants.
Any variant names of the place or names of places assigned to use that code are listed on successive lines, with the first such name preceded by the symbol UF (used for).
Thus when using country codes to retrieve records, if the code for the entity has changed since the implementation of an earlier code list, it is advisable to specify both the new and previously assigned (historical) codes in the retrieval request if records coded prior to the changes are desired.

ICANN | ICANN Accra Meeting Topic: Draft Report of the .info Country Names Discussion Group
The issue of the appearance of country and distinct economy names embedded in domain names of the top-level domain.INFO was addressed at the September 2001 Montevideo ICANN Board meeting through a communication by the GAC to the ICANN Board.
The appropriate use of such names is of concern to governments and other public authorities in the light of the risk of their speculative and abusive registration and use, particularly by registrants and resellers without any relationship with the country or place concerned.
The list provided to Afilias, consistent with the GAC recommendation and subsequent to the ICANN Board resolution, contained both English-language country and distinct economy names, as listed on the ISO 3166-1 standard, and their equivalents in the official languages of the countries concerned.
