In the late 19th Century the term 'cruiser' came to mean ships designed to fulfill such a role, and from the 1890s to the 1950s a 'cruiser' was a warship larger than a destroyer but smaller than a battleship.
The Dutch navy was noted for its cruisers in the 17th century, while the British and later French and Spanish later caught up in terms of their numbers and deployment.
The development of the anti-aircraft cruiser began in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Royal Navy re-armed several of their WWI light cruisers to provide protection against aircraft for the larger warships.

 The History of Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers
A third Ark Royal entered service in 1938 and originally she was to have been joined by three sisterships, but more of the Illustrious Class were built instead.
This attack effectively eliminated the Italian Navy but perhaps more significantly it demonstrated the power, ability and potential of the carrier and the attack was used as a model by the Japanese for their devastating attack on Pearl Harbour.
Due to the severe manpower problems that the navy faced it was decide d that only two carriers could be kept operational at any one time with the third either in reserve or long refit.

Although they were fighting the same enemy, the Royal Navy and the United States Navy did not cooperate operationally, nor did they share operational plans or come to mutual understandings about deployment of their forces.
The USS Clark, an 1805-ton Porter class destroyer built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in May 1936 and was designed to serve as a flagship of a squadron or division of smaller destroyers.
Navy regulations of 1870 refer to the rating as Bayman (possibly sick-bay-man), and in 1898 it became Hospital Steward, in turn becoming Pharmacist's Mate in 1917.

Of the earlier class of ships, the France had been lost in 1922, the Courbet and Paris escaped to Britain in 1940, and the Jean Bart, renamed Océan, was scuttled in Toulon in 1942 when the Germans moved to occupy all of France.
The term "Treaty Cruisers" refers to the cruisers built under the treaty restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1921 and the London Naval Treaty of 1930.
When, after a fashion, it was revived, as the "heavy cruiser" under the regime of the Treaty Cruisers, with CA hull numbers, these were considered cruisers proper and were given city names like other cruisers.

 Royal Navy
I served with the Royal Navy from 1956 to 1967 and the RNR until 1981 leaving as a CPOSA (S).
These guns gave the class the greatest fire-power of any cruiser the Royal Navy had ever built, with the water cooled 6-inch and 3-inch guns capable of firing 20 and 90 rounds per minute per gun respectively (although this rate of fire would empty the magazines in a few minutes).
Blake was the last cruiser in the Royal Navy and in December 1979 ended a 100 year tradition of RN Cruisers.

 US Cruisers List: Guided Missile Cruisers
The two classes were to be structurally identical; they used essentially the same missile launch system to accomodate Talos (Galveston class) or Terrier (Providence class) missiles; the mast arrangement varied according to the missile type.
The entire class was given an AAW upgrade during the late-1960's and early 1970's, Terrier launchers modified to fire Terrier or Standard SM-1ER.
The entire class was taken out of service in the early 1990's, stricken and transferred to the Maritime Administration for disposal.
