List of cryptography topics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is a categorised and (somewhat) annotated list of the same articles in subject groupings at Topics in cryptography; it will probably be more useful to those attempting to make some sense of the field.
Topics in cryptography — an analytical list of articles and terms.
List of cryptographers — an annotated list of cryptographers.

The book list (at least the original one appended to the note of warning) was specifically (1) brief, (2) chosen from amongst well written books (3) chosen from amongst reliable ones and (4) annotated specifically for the purpose of guiding article readers (assumed to be non crypto sophisticates) in a responsible way into the field.
I agree that the list was getting too long, and had acquired some not very distinctive items, I think the solution to that problem would have been to prune it some, sending the pruned items, perhaps to an other books page, rather than deleting the entire list.
cryptology', but this raises a collison of sorts with the 'Topics in Cryptography' article which has now acquired something of a life on its own as an 'analytic glossary' if such a term there be.

 Cryptology
We had a number of possible topics to choose from and I choose cryptology, because I already had a passing interest in thanks to my attempts to code encryption algorithms for my computer programs.
The science of cryptology is the science of secure communications, formed from the Greek words kryptós, "hidden", and lógos, "word".
Much of the terminology of cryptography can be linked back to the time when only written messages were being encrypted and the same terminology is still used regardless of whether it is being applied to a written message or a stream of binary code between two computers.

Cryptology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Cryptology is an engineering discipline, informed by telecommunications engineering practice, the communications theory aspects of information theory (see Shannon and Weaver, Mathematical Theory of Communication, University of Illinois Press, (about 1949), and Shannon's articles (in 1949?) in the Bell System Technical Journal on communications secrecy, and by the theory of computational complexity.
Cryptology is often taken as a synonym for cryptography and occasionally for cryptanalysis as well, but specialists in the field have for years adopted the convention that cryptology is the more inclusive term, encompassing both cryptography and cryptanalysis.
Often referred to as the "definitive" work on cryptology, this is a massive volume that exhaustively covers the history of codes and codebreaking from ancient times through the Cold War.

The inaugural research program of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore took place from July to December 2001 and was devoted to coding theory and cryptology.
These tutorials covered fundamental aspects of coding theory and cryptology and were designed to prepare for original research in these areas.
The topics range from mathematical areas such as computational number theory, exponential sums and algebraic function fields through coding-theory subjects such as extremal problems, quantum error-correcting codes and algebraic-geometry codes to cryptologic subjects such as stream ciphers, public-key infrastructures, key management, authentication schemes and distributed system security.
