Dadaism - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The movement was, among other things, a protest against the barbarism of the War and what Dadaists believed was an oppressive intellectual rigidity in both art and everyday society; its works were characterized by a deliberate irrationality and the rejection of the prevailing standards of art.
Dada probably began in the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich in 1916 (by some accounts on October 6), and there were active dadaists in New York such as Marcel Duchamp and the Liberian art student, Beatrice Wood, who had left France at the onset of World War I.
Interestingly, at the same time that the Zürich dadaists were busy making noise and spectacle at the Cabaret Voltaire, Vladimir Lenin was writing his revolutionary plans for Russia in a nearby apartment.

This collection of 7 piano pieces not only documents his dedication to respond to and further develop the rapidly changing compositional currents of the last 30 years, but also forms an ensemble of works univocally expressing his devotion to elegance, imagination and meticulous craftsmanship.
The frequently irregular, yet always proportionally perfect rhythmic distribution of the melodic figures in the earlier atonal pieces is reborn in the later sonatas in the shape of figures formed by tonic accents, floating over the more constant pulse of minimalist permutations.
It is Sellars' whit which forms the thread through all of his styles, be it in the guise of terse elegance in the atonal pieces, dadaistic absurdity, combinatorial obsessions, or the carnevalistically extravagant orgy of notes in the Sonata Brasiliera.

The third track is one of the Mancunian duo's more minimalist pieces, with the infinite repetition of a filtered hip-hop beat laced with an elegant, yet melancholic synth melody.
The first track is a piece called 'Mad Legs In a Sack' by Damian le Gassick and sounds -remarkably- like Penguin Cafe Orchestra, with wildly dueling horns and strings and pianos, doing a mad dance, sounding like the Queen's tea party was crashed by bumbling crooks.
The disc finishes off with a 'remix' of the last piece, and it's a stretched out ambient whirl of distant horns, far away pianos, warm hums and dark drones that eventually erupt into a noisy reverb drenched miasma.

The History of Rock Music. Eugene Chadbourne: biography, discography, reviews, links
While drawing from a kaleidoscope of rock and jazz guitar techniques as well as from the chaotic structures of Charles Ives' symphonies and Frank Zappa's dadaistic pieces, Eugene Chadbourne was a free improvisor whose roots were in rural white music, the kind espoused and expanded by John Fahey's avantgarde folk program.
Chadbourne was quite unique in the history of music for been at the same time an avantgarde composer in the classical tradition, a jazz improviser, a folk musician and a member of a rock band.
Such an endless list makes Chadbourne a very minor artist, as opposed to the giant he could be if he managed to get some focus.
