		The fiction writer's story, presented from a specific viewpoint, grows out of an appropriate setting where believable characters and significant, complicating events are developed through vivid narration and incisive dialogue; the suspense and action of fiction is directed toward the resolution of the initiating problem.
		Fictionalization is used as a means of protecting the source, the writer and the publication from lawsuits.
		When a work of fiction is based on a true incident, the author should give fictitious names to the characters, as well as change their occupations, the setting, etc., to avoid risking a lawsuit for invasion of privacy.

		In most detective fiction, the major crime committed is against a person because (a) it more personally engages the fears and sensibilities of the reader, and (b) it naturally produces a general cry for an investigation.
		Murder is a most useful crime in detective fiction because it destroys the fiction, forcing society (and the reader) to seek the offender and to reconstruct the crime.
		Detective fiction does offer the opportunity to complete successfully a longer work and then offers hope that a second can be read using skills learned from the first.

	Murder in the Stacks: Web Resources for Mystery and Detective Fiction
		The heart of the site is "a never-complete listing of private dicks and janes, and selected other tough guys and gals, listed by character, with all appearances in novels, short stories, film, television, radio and other media." Includes new and original stories.
		This is a very popular subgenre and the list, compiled by Dean James, a well-known bibliographer in the field, is a goldmine (although not updated in some time).
		DorothyL is a mystery and detective fiction discussion group, named in honor of Dorothy L. Sayers, which currently has more than 1500 members, including librarians, writers, publishers, booksellers, and just plain fans.

		Although there were women detectives in American popular fiction as early as 1883 (Clarice Dyke, by Harry Rockwood), Anna Katharine Green's aristocratic spinster Amelia Butterworth was the best-known, premiering in That Affair Next Door (1897).
		The pulps, such as Black Mask, had featured a few detective couples, but they were written by men, although the editor of that magazine in its later days was a woman.
		Honey West is the daughter of a police detective and works as a private eye in California.
