Economic geography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Economic geography is the study of the widely varying economic conditions across the earth.
These aspects of economics were noted by Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations and have also been studied by modern economists like David Landes at Harvard University and the 20th century economist Ellsworth Huntington.
Ellsworth Huntington, a professor of economics at Yale University in the early 20th century noted that the Northern, cold regions like the U.S., Britain, Europe and Japan had large, well-developed economies while the hot, tropical countries were less well endowed—the so-called equatorial paradox.

Economics - KnowledgeIsFun.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Economics is said to be normative when it recommends one choice over another, or when a subjective value judgement is made.
Conversely, economics is said to be positive when it tries to objectively predict and explain consequences of choices, given a set of assumptions and/or a set of observations.
Economics, which focuses on measurable variables, is broadly divided into two main branches: microeconomics, which deals with individual agents, such as households and businesses, and macroeconomics, which considers the economy as a whole, in which case it considers aggregate supply and demand for money, capital and commodities.

Economics is said to be positive when it attempts to explain the consequences of different choices given a set of assumptions and normative when it prescribes a certain route of action.
Much of economics assumes that individuals seek to maximize their happiness or utility: however, whether they rationally attempt to optimize their well-being given available information is a source of much debate.
Modern economic thought is usually considered to have begun with Adam Smith in the late 18th century, although earlier thinkers such as the Spanish Scholastics and the physiocrats made important contributions.

Economics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Economics is a social science that studies human behavior and welfare as a relationship between ends socially required and scarce means which have alternative uses (Lionell Robbins, 1935).
Despite the extreme controversy surrounding larger economic issues, there is significant agreement among mainstream economists on the fundamentals of the subject, especially as reflected in microeconomics as opposed to macroeconomics.
Modern economic thought is usually said to have begun with Adam Smith in the late 18th century, although earlier thinkers such as the Spanish Scholastics and the physiocrats made important contributions.

Since economic analysis focuses on decision making, it can be applied, with varying degrees of success, to any field where people are faced with alternatives – education, marriage, health, etc. Public choice theory studies how economic analysis can apply to those fields traditionally considered outside of economics.
The term economics was coined around 1870 and popularized by influential "neoclassical" economists such as Alfred Marshall (Welfare definition), as a substitute for the earlier term political economy, which referred to "the economy of polities" – competing states.

Society Fresh : Article 'Economy of Nigeria'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The oil-rich Nigerian economy, long hobbled by political instability, corruption, and poor macroeconomic management, is undergoing substantial economic reform under the new civilian administration.
New oil wealth, the concurrent decline of other economic sectors, and a lurch toward a statist economic model fueled massive migration to the cities and led to increasingly widespread poverty, especially in rural areas.
Along with the endemic malaise of Nigeria's non-oil sectors, the economy continues to witness massive growth of "informal sector" economic activities, estimated by some to be as high as 75% of the total economy.

Since its economy is highly dependent on the rest of the former Soviet Union for energy and raw materials, the breakdown in trade has had a serious effect, exacerbated at times by drought and civil conflict.
