The Royal Navy is known as the "senior service" in the UK Armed Forces, as it is the oldest of the three branches.
In the latter stages of the Cold War, the Royal Navy was reconfigured with three ASW aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers.
The Royal Navy also participated in the Gulf War, the Kosovo conflict, the Afghanistan Campaign, and the 2003 Iraq War, the last of which saw RN warships bombard positions in support of the Al Faw Peninsula landings by Royal Marines.

The first reformation and major expansion of the Navy Royal, as it was then known, occurred in the 16th Century during the reign of King Henry VIII whose ships, the "Henri Grace a Dieu ("Great Harry")" and "Mary Rose", engaged the French navy in a battle in the Solent in 1545.
In that time, the Royal Navy suffered only one major defeat, the Battle of the Chesapeake against France in 1781, and was able to defeat all challengers, as at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 where a combined Spanish and French fleet was decisivly beaten.
In the latter stages of the Cold War, the Royal Navy was reconfigured with three Anti-submarine warfare aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers.

 USS Winjah (CVE-54) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The USS Winjah (CVE-54) (originally AVG-54 then later ACV-54) was a Prince William-class escort aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, leased to the Royal Navy during World War II.
Winjah was laid down on 5 June 1943 at Tacoma, Washington, by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co.; assigned to the United Kingdom under lend-lease on 23 June; redesignated CVE-54 on 15 July; launched on 22 November; and delivered to the British on 18 February 1944.
Authorized for disposal on 14 June, Winjah was struck from the Navy Registry on 8 July and sold to the Waterman Steamship Co., of Mobile, Alabama on 12 February 1947 as the South Africa Star.

Ray V. Blanco; redesignated CVE–46, 15 July 1943; transferred to the United Kingdom, 8 November 1943; and commissioned in the Royal Navy as Rance.
As one of the 38 converted C3 escort carriers transferred to the United Kingdom, Rance joined the merchant aircraft carriers guarding the Atlantic convoy routes.
Declared not essential to the defense of the U.S., she was struck from the Navy List, 22 January 1947, and sold, 9 June 1947, to the Waterman Steamship Corp., Mobile, Ala.

 Colossus Class Light Fleet Aircraft Carriers
Aircraft Carriers were vital in the Korean War (1950-3), providing mobile airfields for allied warplanes and four Royal Navy Colossus Class vessels participated in the three year conflict.
Of the Carriers retained for the Royal Navy, Triumph was converted into a heavy repair ship while the others spent most their remaining service as training vessels or in reserve before heading to the scrapyard by the mid 1960s.
On November 13th 1952 she was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy at Devonport on loan and was renamed HMAS Melbourne.

 The History of Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers
A third Ark Royal entered service in 1938 and originally she was to have been joined by three sisterships, but more of the Illustrious Class were built instead.
This attack effectively eliminated the Italian Navy but perhaps more significantly it demonstrated the power, ability and potential of the carrier and the attack was used as a model by the Japanese for their devastating attack on Pearl Harbour.
Due to the severe manpower problems that the navy faced it was decide d that only two carriers could be kept operational at any one time with the third either in reserve or long refit.

The Future Carrier Borne Aircraft was thus renamed in May 2001 as the "Future Joint Combat Aircraft" (FJCA) to better reflect its status as a common Royal Navy/Royal Air Force (RN/RAF) aircraft capable of both sea- and land-based operations.
This decision was expected as the CVF carriers are also at least two years behind schedule, and the MOD is reluctant to lead bringing the F-35B service with all its potential problems, rather than have the benefit of the USMC's trail blazing.
However the RN remains determined that its new carriers will still be able to operate three full 12 aircraft JCA squadrons, despite intense pressure to reduce the carriers size and cost significantly on the basis that there is no point in having large carriers often with empty hangers and flight decks.

The full entry for CVAN-65 from the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships is available on-line, but since DANFS was published in 1963, and the ship was commissioned in 1961, the entry is very short.
I used to use the standard that only ships commissioned into a navy (or Starfleet) could get onto the list, but that would eliminate some of the blimps, and the America's Cup yachts, all of which are historically significant.
