San Diego Zoo's Got Questions?: Extinct animals
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources' (IUCN) 2003 Red List of Threatened Species, there are 717 species and subspecies of animals that have been listed as extinct in the last 500 years.
This list is put together from information that scientists and researchers gather, but it is hard to keep track of all the possible animals in the world.
The IUCN extinct list includes 104 mammals, 129 birds, 22 reptiles, 7 amphibians, 82 fish, 263 snails, 34 bivalves (like clams), 69 insects, 7 crustaceans, and 1 type of flatworm.

Many of prehistoric extinct species have evolved into new species; for example the extinct Hyracotherium (an ancient horse-like animal) was the ancestor of several extant species including the horse, the zebra and the donkey.
A species may become functionally extinct when only a handful of individuals survive, which are unable to reproduce due to health, age, lack of both sexes (in species that reproduce sexually), or other reasons.
Species listed under this status by the WCU are not known to have any living specimens in the wild, and are maintained only in zoos or other artificial environments.

A species may become functionally extinct when only a handful of individuals survive, which are unable to reproduce due to poor health, age, sparse distribution over a large range, a lack of individuals of both sexes (in sexually reproducing species), or other reasons.
Species listed under this status by the World Conservation Union (WCU) are not known to have any living specimens in the wild, and are maintained only in zoos or other artificial environments.

 AMERICAN MONSTERS
This is a cache of creatures which are known to science, but at one time or another were believed to have joined the ever growing list of extinct animals.
The significance of these creatures lies not only in the fact that they have managed to somehow survive, but more intriguingly that they were able to do it while remaining hidden from the world of man (with the exception of a few keen-eyed natives) for hundreds if not thousands of years.
This suggests that there may be other animals destined to be removed from this tragically rising catalogue or - more intriguingly perhaps - that there may be a new species or phylum of creatures, lurking in the darkness of some uncharted rainforest, which is unlike any which we have ever encountered.

2006 IUCN Red List – Organization of Information
For Extinct species (and infra-specific taxa), extra documentation is required indicating the effective date of extinction, the causes of the extinction and the details of surveys which have been conducted to search for the species.
Taxa removed from the Red List for taxonomic reasons (i.e., they are considered synonyms of other taxa) are searchable (searches will indicate the synonyms found under their accepted/correct names); and the synonym/s are listed on the Detailed Results page for the accepted taxon.
Most plant taxa on the Red List have had their distributions recorded down to BRU level where appropriate, but unfortunately sub-country information is still lacking for most of the animal species.

Extinction of a species may come suddenly when an otherwise healthy species is wiped out completely, as when toxic pollution renders its entire habitat unlivable; or may occur gradually over thousands or millions of years, such as when a species gradually loses out competition for food to better adapted competitors.
She further argues that since species go extinct "all the time" the disappearance of a few more will not destroy the ecosystem: "We're not left with a wasteland every time a species vanishes.

EXTINCT IN THE WILD (EW) A taxon is Extinct in the wild when it is known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalised population (or populations) well outside the past range.
A taxon is presumed extinct in the wild when exhaustive surveys in known and/or expected habitat, at appropriate times (diurnal, seasonal, annual), throughout its historic range have failed to record an individual.
Listing of taxa in this category indicates that more information is required and acknowledges the possibility that future research will show thatthreatened classification is appropriate.
