The Institute for Advanced Study is a private institution in Princeton Township, New Jersey, U.S.A., designed to foster pure cutting-edge research by scientists in a variety of fields without the complications of teaching or funding, or the agendas of sponsorship.
In the United States, the next oldest member of the SIAS consortium is the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavorial Sciences, exists near Stanford University.
The European SIAS members (which also came into being since 1970) are the Collegium Budapest in Budapest, Hungary; the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar, the Netherlands; the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, in Uppsala, Sweden; the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in Berlin, Germany.

The Institute was founded as the Institute for Interdenominational Studies, was then called the Institute for Religious Studies, and then was renamed the Institute for Religious and Social Studies (IRSS), the name by which it was known for most of the period these records cover.
Members of the Institute on Ethics also devoted themselves to the planning of a never realized World Academy of Ethics, which would have been a permanent, independent institution devoted to the pursuit of ethical and moral problems.

Following the original report on women faculty in the sciences, the Provost asked the remaining four schools at MIT to conduct a similar study on the status of women faculty in their departments.
The schools represented were: Harvard University, MIT, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale.
This groundbreaking 1999 study analyzed the status of women faculty in the six departments in the School of Science at MIT.

Since the recent appointment of Drew Faust as founding Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, I have been working closely with her and with the Acting Dean, Mary Maples Dunn, to help develop and support a long-term planning process for the Institute.

Pass an oral examination based on a reading list you construct in conjunction with your examiners, and which is based on a master list regularly revised by the Institute.
The reading list will be drawn from a master list, modified by you and your examining committee; it may include literature related to your research field, but it should predominately emphasize a broad spectrum of theoretical literature central to feminist scholarship.
