 Volcano
A good example of this is the Great þjórsárhraun (Thjórsárhraun) lava flow which was produced by an eruptive fissure almost in the geographical center of Iceland roughly 8.000 years ago, and it flowed all the way down to the sea, a distance of 130 kilometers, and covered an area of 800 square km.
Volcanic cones result from eruptions that throw out mostly small pieces of rock that build up around the vent.
Sulfur dioxide is one of the main components of volcanic gases, and increasing amounts of it herald the arrival of more and more magma near the surface.

News in Science - Volcanic eruption inspired The Scream - 10/12/2003
Astronomers say a volcanic eruption that made the sky turn red was the inspiration for the lurid colours in Edvard Munch's famous painting, The Scream.
They publish their findings in the February 2004 issue of the magazine Sky and Telescope to explain how a volcanic eruption half a world away influenced the Norwegian artist.
The most famous version of The Scream was painted in 1893 as part of The Frieze of Life, a group of works derived by Munch's personal experiences, including the deaths of his mother in 1868 and his sister in 1877.

 biology - Volcano
Large, explosive volcanic eruptions inject water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF) and ash (pulverized rock and pumice) into the stratosphere to heights of 10-20 miles above the Earth's surface.
The most significant impacts from these injections come from the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which condenses rapidly in the stratosphere to form fine sulfate aerosols.
Jesuit Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), witnessed eruptions of Aetna and Stromboli, then visited the crater of Vesuvius and published his view of an Earth with a central fire connected to numerous others caused by the burning of sulphur, bitumen and coal.
