Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of either plot, theme, setting, or all three.
The defining characteristics of fantasy fiction and its many overlapping sub-genres are the subject of debate among writers, scholars and fans of the genre.
The boundaries of the fantasy literary genre are not well-defined, and the same is therefore true for the film genre as well.

Films like "Alien," "Star Wars," "The Thief of Baghdad," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Beauty and the Beast," "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Wizard of Oz," and "It's A Wonderful Life" are all staples in any legitimate DVD library.
Fantasy was previously perfectly acceptable, but as the battle for realism was won by a few literary snobs, fantasy began to fade as a "legitimate" form of expression.
These films also played a role preparing the way for the arrival of a full-blown epic fantasy that could be recognized for its greatness despite its genre classification.

 Film Genres
Musical/dance films are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical or dance performance integrated as part of the film narrative), or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.
War films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film.
All films have at least one major genre, although there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four overlapping genre (or sub-genre) types that identify them.

In the hard-boiled detective film, crime becomes a dark metaphor that is symptomatic of what is wrong with society, rather than simply a single aberration from the norm.

The film begins with a visual trick that was used by Truffaut in The 400 Blows-in the scene where the boy is interviewed by the psychiatrist.

 Fantasy Films 101.11 1989's "Erik the Viking" | Gamegrene.com
The fantasy films of the 1980s, for all their lightheartedness, were in much the same vein.
Both of these films also deal indirectly with the issue I've been dancing around here for 11 long episodes: that 1989 marked a change in thinking for the fantasy genre, both in the world of role-playing and in the world of fantasy film making.
Likewise, it was the believability of the fantasy films we watched in the 1980s which made them the works of art that they truly were.

SF Signal: Did Fantasy Movies Fail To Make A Resurgence?
Another thought-provoking read from The Movie Blog's John Campea - Lord Of The Rings - Why Fantasy Failed To Make A Resurgence - in which he says that Lord of the Rings: Return of the King made it more difficult for fantasy films to be produced.
He does note the success of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (writing it off as fairy tale instead of fantasy) and the upcoming Eragon which he notes that people are already dismissing it as a LOTR knock-off based on conjecture.
LOTR worked because the average joe moviegoer acknowledes (or is at least aware) that LOTR earned the respect that a lot of fantasy novels never get, and that somehow justified their attendance when I am sure that Eragon will draw only those who have read the book.

Commentaries: Moving Pictures - Christianity Today Movies
Other films that were among the AandF favorites included P.T. Anderson's multi-character masterpiece Magnolia and Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew, a sparse and poverty-stricken account of Christ's life considered by most Jesus movie aficionados to be the greatest of its kind.
Another relative no-brainer for the AandF list was the exquisite Babette's Feast, the story of a cook who spends all she has to bless her employers—and their entire village—with a remarkable feast that reawakens their spirits like the sacrificial fragrance of the jar of perfume poured out over Christ's feet.
The director with the most films on the list is Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia's great Cold War director whose Christian faith not only found subtextual expression in his movies but also placed him in constant struggle with Soviet authorities.
