The term "composer" is often used specifically to mean a composer in the Western tradition of classical music.
In popular and folk music, the composer is typically called a songwriter (since the music generally takes the form of a song), and composers of jazz are often referred to as jazz writers.

 Sultan Composers
A list of musicians to be found in a register dating from the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent (Topkapı Palace Museum 7643) the kopuzcus Şaban and Husrev, mentioned as having been musicians at the court of Bayezid II, the two kanuni Şadi and Muhittin and a kemençeci by the name of Nasuh.
Composed between the first half of the sixteenth century and the second half of the present century, they have remained for many years in private collections known as "Sultani Besteler" (Sultanic Compositions).
These composers, who have contributed Turkish classical music, -some on amateur and some on professional level- are here presented solely on the basis of their artistic achievements.

Looking at statistics in the annual BMI Student Composer Awards (now in its 38th year) the percentage of women entering has been between 10 and 20% in all the years I have been involved with this program.
Through the 1970s, ten names were added to the list (none of them winning more than once) and in the 1980s, twelve more women received the prize, with 6 of them winning more than once.
She has chaired New York Women Composers since 1985 and serves on boards of or acts as advisor to many new music organizations.

Many of the composers of the day were directly hired by royalty for their services, or sponored by wealthy patrons.
I'd bet a shrimp and broccoli combination plate that there were female artists back then whose work was legit and artistically important, but was ignored and never taken seriously, and did not survive in print or any other form for us to see now.
