City - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A city is an urban area, differentiated from a town, village, or hamlet by size, population density, importance, or legal status.
Although city can refer to an agglomeration including suburban and satellite areas, the term is not appropriate for a conurbation (cluster) of distinct urban places, nor for a wider metropolitan area including more than one city, each acting as a focus for parts of the area.
In the United Kingdom, a city is a town which has been known as a city since time immemorial, or which has received city status by royal charter — which is normally granted on the basis of size, importance or royal connection (traditional pointers have been whether the town has a cathedral or a university).

City   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Some cathedral cities, for example St. David's in Wales, are quite small, and may not be known as cities in common parlance.
The term city can be used to mean either an area of contiguous urbanization or a particular municipality (an area within the political borders of an incorporated municipality).
This is due to the large clustering of hard surfaces that heat up in sunlight and that channel rainwater into underground ducts.

Amazon.com: Books: Dead Cities: And Other Tales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Despite the fact that it's Preface would have you believe Dead Cities is a meditation upon post-September 11th urban America; it is rather a collection of essays and articles written during the last decade which each provide a broadly different `take' upon the notion of the dead or dying city.
Dead Cities examines the fragility of our urban infrastructures, threatened by man-made or natural factors, providing us with a fractured journey through parts of America in which the apocalypse has already taken place and where the destruction of the twin towers seems an almost inevitable climax.
The worst incorporated city must be Vernon, which has 48,000 workers, mostly Latinos in sweatshops, and an actual resident electorate of 90 people, who do not use their tax revenues to help their workers but the property developers who run the city almost as a private fief.

The SF Site Featured Review: Dark Cities Underground & Reading List of Lisa Goldstein
By combining real incidents and people from the histories of subway construction with fictional characters and episodes from her own imagination, she is able to leave a convincing impression that, if not her theory, then at least something unusual is connected with subway systems and the London Underground in particular.
Goldstein creates a world both ancient and strange where magic not only exists but is an element in the bricks of the houses, in the paving stones of the streets and in the very air that is breath itself.
Her interests are diverse and eclectic, but the bulk fall within the realm of speculative fiction.

If fiction can be regarded as a culture's subconscious, then it's clear that we are a nation obsessed with the very rich.
But given the legion of publicity men and image handlers surrounding the typical real-life billionaires, understanding these fictitious characters is as close as most of us will come to grasping the minds of the very rich.

And I guess I'm talking needless panicking -- because panicking about real, actual, serious mistakes (oops, the scalpel shouldn't have gone that deep!) is not cool on any level, and even mistakes that aren't life or death, but fire-able offense kind of mistakes -- I don't know what that is at a law firm...
All this is to lead up to a silly little anecdote about a stupid mistake I made this afternoon that at the moment I realized it felt pretty disastrous, but that was just the adrenaline response, and then I realized it was just a stupid little mistake, and I'll probably survive.
