  Anomalist Feature: The "Lincoln Legend"
Some are "urban legends"--supposedly true fictional stories that allegedly happened recently to a friend of a friend, describing such bizarre incidents as the vanishing hitchhiker, the microwaved pet, the stolen kidney, and alligators in city sewers.
Others are alleged "true weird mysteries" based on fictional stories passed off as "fact" and frequently repeated in popular books and articles.

Diaries have evolved from business notations, to listings of weather and daily personal events, through to inner exploration of the psyche, or a place to express one's deepest self.
Some people use the words diary and journal interchangeably, others apply strict differences to journals, diaries and journaling - dated, undated, inner focused, outer focused, forced etc. Some diarists think of their diaries as a special friend, even going so far as to name it.
The idea, as expressed with the title, being that a diary doesn't have to be a dry recording of weather or daily events.

"Diaries" is a rather loose term -- this isn't a journal, but a collection of journal entries, letters, poems, songs, and reflections on herself, only some of which make sense ("I am not here as a muse for those Revolting old Ghosts from my Pasts"), pasted into more-or-less chronological order.
Some of the diary like notes are interesting but as a reader what frustrated me is that I didn't what time period the notes came from or what era in her life.
I expected it to be her biography in full, but instead it's her diary entries laid out in a very nice, girlie way.

TheMovieBoy Review - The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
"The Motorcycle Diaries" details the eye-opening, life-changing seven-month trip through South America that 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara De la Serna, later to be known as Che and become the leader of the Cuban Revolution, took with 29-year old pal Alberto Granado in 1952.
For the viewer, it genuinely feels as if he or she is taking a trip through South America, meeting the diverse citizens of the countries, witnessing the gorgeously lush sites, and going through all of the experiences and pitfalls that Guevara and Granado do.
Based on the journals of Che Guevara and a book by Alberto Granado, "The Motorcycle Diaries" is an intoxicating voyage through places rarely captured in cinema with such a degree of depth and distinctness.

So the Science Fiction Book Club named "The Most Significant SF & Fantasy Books of the Last 50 Years, 1953-2002." The ones I've read are bolded; my comments on the list follow.
I'm wondering if, with some of these authors, the list-makers just felt that they had to be added because of their overall impact on the genre, and picked said author's best-known book in order to represent their total effect.
However, I will defend the list on one point you raise: I don't mind the Gormenghast trilogy not being included because the third book (Titus Alone) is just astonishingly terrible and doesn't fit in with the other two at all.

The Princess Diaries 2 is not quite as bad as it could be, but as with Disney's previous live action sequel The Santa Clause 2, much of the fun was in the revelation and transformation of the first movie.

Recreating the true stories of actual people requires additional research to assure that the diaries present an accurate portrait of these teenagers' hopes, fears, and dreams as well as depicting the events that affected them during their lifetime.

This 1971 “actual diary” of a teenaged girl who died of a drug overdose was meant to be a cautionary tale for adolescents in the post-hippie era.
