This list is divided into the older, classic authors who had an influence on the genre, and those who are still producing valuable work today.
Since some fantasy is classified as regular fiction, and some is in science fiction, check both sections of the Library, and don't forget to check the New Books section of the Library for the latest by the Current Stars.
Michael Moorcock: Elric: Song of the Black Sword is the start of a series telling the adventures of Elric, a wizardly hero who is physically weak except when sustained by his morally-corrupt sword.

The story of the Sword in the Stone has an analogue in some versions of the story of Sigurd (the Norse proto-Siegfried), who draws his father Sigmund's sword out of a tree where it is embedded.
According to some speculators, the legend of the Sword in the Stone is possibly a reference and remembrance in storytelling of the techniques of Bronze Age sword-making technology.
Swords named Excalibur or similar occur in some videogames, for example Final Fantasy series, the Soul Calibur series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Tales of Symphonia, Onimusha Blade Warriors, Secret of Mana, Tomb Raider: Legend, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, RuneScape, World of Warcraft and City of Heroes, Ace Combat Zero.

His popularity amongst both fans and his fellow writers was considerable, and his science fiction novels The Big Time (1958) and The Wanderer (1964), along with the short stories "Gonna Roll the Bones" (1967), about a gambler playing dice with Death, and "Ship of Shadows" (1970), all won Hugo awards.
Fans awarded him the Gandalf (Grand Master) award at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1975, and in 1981 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America voted him the recipient of their Grand Master award.
They are also notable among sword and sorcery stories in that, over the course of the stories, his two heroes mature, take on more responsibilities, and eventually settle down into marriage.

The Superman Timeline, compiled by David T. Chappell, is a list of major "Superman Events" that mixes actual dates and age references as one would expect in such a work.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Chronology, by Damian Gordon, Michael Norwitz, and Philip Graves, is really a "League of Leagues," profiling various groups of literary heroes and their adventures through the centuries, as detailed in the landmark series by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.

Simmons first novel, this is described by the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction as showing Calcutta 'as a moral and psychic cesspool, into which the protagonists...sink very deeply indeed as unleased evil...threatens to flood the 1980s.' Hey, it was KATE that recommended this, not me.
The rationale of this series is really fairly science- fictional, but the tone is fantasy, and you'll generally find them marketed as fantasy.

Interestingly, in several early French works such as Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval, the Story of the Grail and the Vulgate Lancelot Proper section, Excalibur is said to be the property of Gawain, one of Arthur's best knights.
This is in contrast to later versions, where the sword belongs solely to the king.
It is from that sword that Arthur receives his fatal blow.

 Reading List
Her books range from very good to excellent, from funny to serious, and the old one seems to be being suddenly reissued.
Invisible Cities is great (fictional time-traveling conversation between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan about Polo's travels), but my favorite is If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, which is the story of two Readers who can only find first chapters of amazing books - and as they search, they find more and more beginnings.
Titles I have are listed below, anyone interested by any titles (and I think you get a good clue as to what they're like by the titles) I would gladly mail a synopsis to anyone off list or on, either way let me know.

 The Recommended Author List D-J
Eddings is by far the most highly recommended author on the List (hardly surprising, as the list originated in the alt.fan.eddings newsgroup).
I've hesitated to add this to the list, since it is an early work in the field (1922), and quite different from what most people expect from fantasy now, but since *Corinne* brought it up...Read it.
Among them were the 'Brak the Barbarian' sword and sorcery series and this amusing parody.
