Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Interchangeable parts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Interchangeable parts are components of an assembly which are designed to meet specific tolerances so that any component of one type can be fitted with any component of a second type.
Eli Whitney saw the potential benefit of developing "interchangeable parts" for the firearms of the United States military, and thus, around 1798, he built ten guns, all containing the same parts and mechanisms, and disassembled them before the United States Congress.
With interchangeable parts, the problems that had plagued the era of unique weapons and equipment passed, and if one mechanism in a weapon failed, a new piece could be ordered and the weapon would not have to be discarded.

This is the period of "classical film theory." There will be hints and indications in some of the readings about the various directions that film theory has explored since the late 1970's.
One way to begin thinking about the theoretical issues raised in an essay is to ask which components of a film theory are being emphasized by an author and which ones are being ignored (see handout "Some Components of a Film Theory" in the Course Reader).
Examples from films are fine as illustrations for your arguments but do not let your paper turn into an examination or an analysis of a film or films (as in Film Studies 146).

About a hundred years ago, people believed that you could look into a dead person's eyes and see the last image they saw before heading off to heaven imprinted on the retina.
And frankly, "Body Parts" could have succumbed to a by-the-numbers anonymous production: the old possessed hand routine is a beloved staple of the horror genre, well-used by hack and genius both.
In the end, "Body Parts" is that rarest of ghoulish, gory gems: a horror movie that can be watched again and again: see it for the gore, the goop, the splatter; see it for Jeff Fahey's hair and earnest, soulful gaze; see it for Brad Dourif---just see it.
