  Film Noir - Films
Film noir was also derived from the crime/gangster and detective/mystery sagas from the 1930s (i.e., Little Caesar (1930), Public Enemy (1931) and Scarface (1932)), but very different in tone and characterization.
The criminal, violent, misogynistic, hard-boiled, or greedy perspectives of anti-heroes in film noir were a metaphoric symptom of society's evils, with a strong undercurrent of moral conflict, purposelessness and sense of injustice.
Film noir films were marked visually by expressionistic lighting, deep-focus or depth of field camera work, disorienting visual schemes, jarring editing or juxtaposition of elements, ominous shadows, skewed camera angles (usually vertical or diagonal rather than horizontal), circling cigarette smoke, existential sensibilities, and unbalanced or moody compositions.

 NeoNoir
The sense that 'noir' created in the 70s and 80s was a 'retro' and nostalgic avoidance of contemporary experience has been encouraged by the often-cited essay, 'Postmodernism and Consumer Society', in which Frederic Jameson assigns to film noir a central role in the vocabulary of commercialized postmodernism.
The contemporary refashioning of noir themes is a manifestation of the flexibility and responsiveness to social change that have characterised noir from its inception and of the continued vitality of the form.
The transformations of the genre in neo-noir have helped to clarify some of the constant, recognisable elements of 'the noir vision', most importantly the moral ambivalence of the protagonist and his (or in neo-noir often her) ill-fated relationship with a wider society that itself is guilty of corruption and criminality.

Conversation with Nathaniel Rich, p. 3 of 5
These are films that are often shot in color but try to stylistically approximate the same kind of effect that was achieved in fl and white but using color, and this takes on many different forms, often using lots of shadow or often using strange colors, things like that.
Many books on film noir don't actually give any kind of clear definition of the genre but simply list all the films that they consider to be film noir, and that's their definition.
Noir came along to say, "Maybe everything isn't quite so great as we all think it is, maybe not everyone's doing so well, maybe there's something more sinister going on, at least underneath the surface." Noir is very much about what's underneath the surface, the underground, the underbelly.

Those are films that set the era's artistic agenda for cinematic crime - the "B" pictures from the majors, and the stuff from Monogram and PRC and Eagle-Lion studios, mainly copied what the "A" films did successfully.
Alfred Hitchcock was not a straight-up noir director, but it'd be a shame not to explore the overlap between the genre-slash-style and his work, particularly in the 40s and 50s.
Ida Lupino's The Hitch-Hiker (1953) has been called the only true noir directed by a woman, but those who make that claim probably also mean to include the provision "during the classic noir period." Regardless, the heroine of American independent cinema proclaimed it her best film and few would argue.

PANBELLO WebNoir 6 - LIST OF FILMS NOIR
Film Noir is principally derived from the Hard-boiled style of crime fiction literature of the Great Depression era, (many Films Noir were adaptations of such novels written by Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and James M. Cain).
Film Noir was defined in retrospect by film critics and movie historians; many of the creators of Film Noir later said they were unaware at the time that they were creating a distinctive film genre.
Film Noir is also a combination of styles with origins in painting and literature in addition to film.

Film noir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key fl-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.
Film noirs embrace a variety of genres, from the gangster film to the police procedural to the so-called social problem picture, and evidence a variety of visual approaches, from meat-and-potatoes Hollywood mainstream to outré.
The makers of film noir turned all this on its head, creating sophisticated, sometimes bleak dramas tinged with mistrust, cynicism, and a sense of the absurd, in settings that were frequently either real-life urban or budget-saving minimalist, with often strikingly expressionist lighting and unsettling techniques such as wildly skewed camera angles and convoluted flashbacks.

Preminger was one of the great noir specialists when he was working at Fox, and the recently released Laura (1944), Whirlpool (1949), and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) are three key examples.
But my favorite Preminger pictures are the 1959 Anatomy of a Murder (not really a noir) and his RKO loan-out Angel Face, sleek and shocking, costarring Jean Simmons in the title role and Robert Mitchum.
She’s a spoiled and murderous heiress with a father fixation (in some ways this is Preminger’s first draft of his 1958 Bonjour Tristesse) and he’s an ambulance driver who becomes the family chauffeur and her lover.

French for "fl film", and is pronounced accordingly ("film nwahr"): the plural is films noirs.
Film noir tends to feature characters trapped in situations (often not of their own making) and making choices out of desperation.
Noir turned all this on its head, creating bleak but intelligent dramas tinged with nihilism and cynicism, in real-life urban settings, and using unsettling techniques such as the confessional voice-over or hero's-eye-view camerawork.

Especially outside of the 1940s and 1950s, inclusion on the list does not necessarily mean there is even a critical consensus on a given film's noir status.
The original titles are given for French-, German-, Spanish-, and Italian-language films; for such films that are well known in the United States under a translated or alternative title, that is given as well.
