Its first publication was Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939), featuring the second appearance of Carl Burgos' android superhero, the Human Torch, and the first generally available appearance of Bill Everett's mutant anti-hero Namor the Sub-Mariner.
Marvel was pioneering new methods of comics storytelling and characterization, addressing more serious themes, and in the process keeping and attracting readers in their teens and beyond.
Marvel was able to capitalize on its successful superhero comics of the previous decade by acquiring a new newsstand distributor and greatly expanding its comics line.

The "voice" of Stan Lee is what one senses in so many of the Marvel Comics of the first half of the 1960s: his sense of humor and generally lighthearted manner, and the depiction of the Bullpen (Lee's name for the staff) as one big, happy family.
Marvel has announced that it will have a set of five "tentpole events'" in 2006, specifying two: "Annihilation", dealing with space/cosmic characters, and "Civil War", involving a political and ethical schism within the Marvel universe over superhero registration.

Realizing the popularity of these publications, New York-based newspaper publishers began to produce their own Sunday “comic supplements.” This era of comic illustration is tentatively referred to as the Victorian Age of comics (although the mantle is something of a misnomer when applied to work as early as Topffer).
Marvel and DC responded to the success of Image with their own brand of glitz, ushering in what some refer to as a “Gimmick Age.” Publishers consciously imitated the eye-popping layouts and military-inspired character designs popularized by Image.
Many specialized comic book-related organizations (for example, Friends of Lulu, an organization devoted to the promotion of women in the industry) are able to both reach a wider audience and to focus their attention on audiences with a niche interest.

Marvel Comics is an American comic book line published by Marvel Entertainment, Inc. Affectionately called the House of Ideas by the fan press, Marvel's best-known comics titles include Fantastic Four, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil, Captain America, and X-Men.
Marvel began publishing further superhero titles featuring such heroes and anti-heroes as the Hulk, Spider-Man, The Mighty Thor, Ant-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, Daredevil, and such memorable antagonists as Doctor Doom, Magneto, Galactus, the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus.
In 1986 Marvel was sold to New World Entertainment (which was eventually acquired, in 1997, as part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation/Fox Group).

Note: A character having a "secret identity" is not enough to qualify the comic as a transformation work (mostly because if it were, half the comics in creation would be listed, and what's the point of that?) In general, transformation should be a significant theme of the comic in order to list it here.
However, MU reprinted the first three issues as a special package in early 1995, a trade paperback containing the first 6 issues came out in late 1995 (with a cover by Kelly Freas), and the series is due to resume sometime in 1996.
