U.S. state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In practice, nearly all states admitted to the union after the original thirteen have been formed from U.S. territories (that is, land under the sovereignty of the United States federal government but not part of any state) that were organized (given a measure of self-rule by Congress).
The states, with their U.S. postal abbreviations, traditional abbreviations, capitals, largest cities, and flags are as follows.
Washington is a state, a city corresponding to the District of Columbia (and thus not part of any state), and a number of cities and counties in various states.

 Civil War Flags
A new flag was authorized to represent the addition of the new state and became offical on 4 July 1863.
The canton (a rectangular division in the upper corner of the flag next to the staff) was to be blue in color and carry a field of equal-sized stars for each state, arranged in a circle, though other designs such as the St. Andrew's cross were also used.
Since this flag was so popular, no doubt partly due to the success of that particular army, the Confederate Congress enacted a bill incorporating the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia as the union of the flag, on a white field.

 Flag Timeline
Adoption of State Flag Desecration Statutes — By the late 1800's an organized flag protection movement was born in reaction to perceived commercial and political misuse of the flag.
Although not a flag burning case, this represented the first time the Court had clearly stated that protest involving the physical use of the flag should be seen as a form of protected expression under the First Amendment.
As a result, the 1989 Act sought to prohibit flag desecration under all circumstances by deleting the statutory requirement that the conduct cast contempt upon the flag and narrowing the definition of the term "flag" so that its meaning was not based on the observation of third parties.

History of the Stars and Stripes (U.S.)
George Washington's HQ flag of blue had six pointed stars on it.
As for the U.S. Flag, it was not really settled officially until 1916 that there would be more red stripes than white ones, and that official act is only binding on the Executive Department and the Military.
However, it would not be improper to display the 48-star and the 49-star flag after that date; with limited exceptions agencies of the Federal Government will continue to display the 48-star and the 49-star flag so long as they remain in good condition and until existing stocks of unused flags are exhausted.

The restored flags that were the most complete and those flags in good condition were hung from the ceiling on the building’s second floor plaza.…In 1988, they were removed from the plaza and placed in the Ohio Historical Society collection storage facilities.
My memory is that each of the two flags bore a simple inscription on one edge stating ‘#th Regt.’ The restoration done by this man was an early and incompetent job of gluing the silk flags to a mesh backing so that only one side could be displayed.
I suppose the state should determine how many flags it has that show the poor glue restoration and determine the time frame the restoration was done and the name of the man who did that job for them, as well as the name of the curator who served at that time.

Has the GOP found its 2006 issue? By Mickey Kaus
No Contest: Much is being made, in the press, the blogs, and the email I'm getting, of the split in the Republican party on immigration: there are pro-crackdown conservatives on the one hand, and rich Republican business backers who need immigrant labor on the other.
Reader L.N. suggested I had exaggerated the number of Mexican flags at various immigrant protest rallies--maybe demo organizers had wised up to the lesson that flaunting allegiance to a neighboring country was not a good way to make most Americans want to let in more people who share your attachment!
Update: The Los Angeles Times, in a break with its recent trend toward improvement, fronts an embarrassing 100% PC rally story that mentions the U.S. flags (which marchers were told to bring) in paragraph one and the equally numerous Mexican flags (which marchers apparently decided to bring on their own) in paragraph #10.
