sport.iafrica.com | today's news Sweden goes football crazy
Sweden's national women's squad was formed in 1973, and became European champions in 1984.
Of Sweden's 3300 football clubs, 1300 also run women's teams, and one fifth of the country's 200 000 adult licenced players are women.
The independence of Swedish women's football is illustrated by the fact that its top clubs are not necessarily attached to the male bastions, AIK or Hammarby in Stockholm, and IF in Malmoe — placing them, quite literally, in a league of their own.

Fan 'Power' and Democracy in Football: Centre for the Sociology of Sport, Department of Sociology, University of ...
All around the country, Supporters Clubs were busy raising money on behalf of their football clubs, and receiving little or nothing in exchange in the way of representation.
Through their use of the media, football supporters have succeeded in helping to re-define public perceptions of themselves, and for this reason are now able to speak with authority and to command some respect.
With football at the highest levels now strongly concerned with profits for shareholders, with ever increasing wage packets for players, and with the keen interests of international television it is hard to see exactly how the interests of the 'ordinary' fan are best protected.

Many believe that football's bubble has burst, that the glory years have passed and that no longer will there be bandwagon-jumping investors, attracted enough to the glamour of football to sign blank cheques.
While many football fans have grown evermore disenfranchised with the sport, its millionaire players and seemingly incompetent and oft-greedy administrators, it is events such as September's Football Finance Forum which seek to address the errors which left the game in such a parlous position.
