Colony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A colony differs from a puppet state or satellite state in that a colony has no independent international representation and the top-level administration of a colony is under direct control of the metropolitan state.
The term "colony" came to mean an overseas district with a majority indigenous population, administered by a distant colonial government.
European countries and the United States, exploiting the weakness of China's waning imperial regime, also maintained so-called international concessions in that country, a sort of colonial enclave; the coastal towns of Macau and Hong Kong were held on long-term leases by Portugal and the United Kingdom.

European absolutism, modeled by the French monarchy -- and mimicked by every other European monarch, including the British King George III -- was something that had no hold over the American colonists.
European monarchs were like huge landowners, holding territory here and there -- including the people and livestock who dwelled and labored on those lands.
Such has been the patient sufferance of the Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to expunge their former systems of government.

Do we need a European Women's History List Disc/Mar 1998
I should prefer to have one list, but European women (and indeed women from other areas: Middle East, Africa) feature relatively seldom that one cannot help wondering whether a separate list would not be the only way to stimulate more in-put in these areas.
As it stands, the list is supposed to reach people in wide varieties of geographic and chronological fields but it is dominated by issues specific to American history (and often modern American).
For this reason, the broad scope of the list may be better kept in place with an eye toward a more focused discussion on the part of those who desire it.

The picture presented by parties of the nationalist Right in Europe is one of great complexity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Next is the Bürgerinitiative party (or the  Partei Rechtsstaatliche Offensive [PRO]) of former judge Roland Schill, who enjoyed brief success with his populist campaigns against immigration and crime, even being elected senator for the Hamburg region—only to be dismissed in August 2003, after a complicated scandal.
This is hardly surprising, given the very nature of nationalism, and that many European countries have historical grievances and territorial aspirations that are directly at odds with their counterpart parties in adjoining countries.
It would seem that the European nationalist Right is going to be around for a long time to come—occasionally feuding, occasionally facing electoral reversals, often failing to capitalize on opportunities through lack of imagination or lack of resources—but nonetheless a force to be reckoned with.

The European empire is said to have held sway over more than 85% of the rest of the globe by the time of the First World War, having consolidated its control over several centuries.
For that matter, other settler countries such as Canada and Australia are sometimes omitted from the category "postcolonial" because of their relatively shorter struggle for independence, their loyalist tendencies toward the mother country which colonized them, and the absence of problems of racism or of the imposition of a foreign language.
The formation of the colony through various mechanisms of control and the various stages in the development of anti-colonial nationalism interest many scholars in the field.
