  Interstate Highway
By initial planning, the Interstate System was designed to be able to move traffic at speeds of 75 to 80 miles per hour (120 to 130 km/h) except in limited stretches (such as steep mountain passes) where Many vehicles cannot maintain such speeds.
In 1974, the maximum speed limit allowed on interstate Highways (along with all others in the country) was reduced to 55 mph (90 km/h) as a gasoline conservation measure in response to the 1973 energy crisis.
On even-numbered Interstates, mileage increases to the east and decreases to the west; and on odd-numbered Interstates, mileage increases to the north and decreases to the south.

 Historical Overview
In 1968, Interstates 284 and 484 were added, part of an extensive list of now-cancelled expressways in metro Hartford.
The new highways, proposed to fill gaps in the network or serve future needs, were never built, as the political climate changed and we learned more about construction, traffic, and their effects.
Interstate 84 was widened to six lanes from Massachusetts to Vernon, and eight to 12 lanes from there to East Hartford.

2002 Conditions and Performance Report: Chapter 8
The size of the gap between an investment requirement scenario and current spending is dependent on the investment requirement analysis and the underlying assumptions used to develop that analysis.
The estimated gap has been reduced to 65.3 percent ($42.2 billion) in 2000, and is projected to further decline to an average of 56.6 percent ($38.7 billion) annually from 2001 through 2003.
The primary reason for the decrease in the gap between current spending and the cost to improve is the increased Federal funding under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and larger highway capital outlays by State and local governments.

Interstate 90 (abbreviated I-90) is the longest interstate highway in the United States at over 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers).
It is arguable that Interstate 280 (Ohio) is as much a spur of Interstate 90 as it is of Interstate 80 because Interstate 80 and 90 designate the same highway (the Ohio Turnpike) in northwestern Ohio.
Additionally, it is part of the longest interstate triplex in the country, as it is joined with I-39 and I-94 from Portage, Wisconsin to Madison, Wisconsin.

The alarming invasion of road funds evidenced in recent years, climaxed by the diversion of hundreds of millions of highway dollars to uses utterly foreign, and accompanied by the crippling of state highway departments and grave cessation of construction activity, can only be stopped by arousing public opinion to the fighting pitch of positive action.
The bubbling good roads booster, with his sentimental appeal, must be replaced by the highway economist armed with sound plans, fundamental facts regarding the dividend producing aspects of improved highways and convincing proof of the equity of proposed highway tax collection and distribution.
The highway departments were required to submit a list of the amount of money proposed for each of the 3 categories of roads and a list of the counties where the projects would be located.

Highway engineering professionals define highway problems based on documented traffic flow problems (Level‑of‑Service, comparisons of actual volume versus designed capacity, etc.) and accident rates (number and severity of accidents relative to exposure as measured by vehicle miles).
On the other hand, the public perceives highway problems by experienced congestion, knowledge of individual accident occurrences, severity of a particular accident and perceived potential hazards such as poor sight distance.

The "Brooklyn-Queens Connecting Highway," which was to be financed by Federal, state and city funds, was proposed as an express bypass through heavily built industrial, commercial and residential areas.
