List of geological features on 243 Ida and Dactyl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of named geological features on asteroid 243 Ida and its moon, Dactyl.
Idaean regiones (geologically distinct areas) are named after the discoverer of the asteroid, and the places where he worked.
The only named dorsum on Ida is Townsend Dorsum, named after Tim E. Townsend, a member of the Galileo probe imaging team.

Dactyl, discovered in 1993, is a tiny asteroid (diameter 1.4 km) that orbits asteroid 243 Ida with a period of 1.54 days at an average distance of 108 km.
The two main theories are that it and Ida formed at the same time, and that it was knocked loose by a later impact.
Dactyl, found by the Galileo probe, was the first asteroid moon discovered.

Science Fair Projects - 243 Ida
243 Ida is a Main belt asteroid that was imaged by the Galileo probe on August 28, 1993.
Some researchers believe that Dactyl formed from debris ejected from Ida by cratering, while others suggest that Ida and Dactyl formed as a pair a billion or more years ago when Ida's parent body was disrupted.
Ida is named after Ida, a Cretan nymph in Greek mythology who lived on a mountain that bore her name (see Mount Ida, Crete).

243 Ida is an asteroid that was imaged by the Galileo probe on August 28, 1993.
The probe discovered that Ida had a small moon, an asteroid dubbed Dactyl, only 1.4 km in diameter; this was the first asteroid moon to be discovered.

Also, many topological features on solar system bodies have been named after people, including many hundreds of craters on the Moon, Mars and other planets and satellites.
In addition to craters there are also various other topological features such as mountains, valleys, ridges on the Moon and other bodies which are also named after people.

planetary nomenclature - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
When images are first obtained of the surface of a planet or satellite, a theme for naming features is chosen and a few important features are named, usually by members of the appropriate IAU task group.
One feature classification, regio, was originally used on early maps of the Moon and Mercury (drawn from telescopic observations) to describe vague albedo features.
Named features on bodies so small that coordinates have not yet been determined are identified on drawings of the body that are included in the IAU Transactions volume of the year when the names were adopted.

243 Ida   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Ida is named after Mount Ida, a mountain important in Greek mythology.
Ida's moon also has a deeper near-infrared absorption and a different color in the violet than any area on this side of Ida.
The moon is not identical in spectral properties to any area of Ida in view here, though its overall similarity in reflectance and general spectral type suggests that it is made of the same rock types basically.

In addition to naming planets and satellites themselves, the individual geological and geographical features (craters, mountains, volcanos and so forth) on those planets and satellites also need to be named.
The Martian nomenclature was clarified in 1958, when a committee of the IAU recommended for adoption the names of 128 albedo features (bright, dark, or colored) observed through ground-based telescopes (IAU, 1960).

Abstracts for the Planetary Geology & Geophysics Program
Geological principles and results from meteoritic studies are used to determine the original parent body composition and the geological processes which produced the asteroidal mineral assemblage.
The technical approach and methodology to be used involves a combination of methods including quantitative modelling of geological processes (e.g., ascent and eruption of magma), photogeologic analysis and geologic interpretation of surface features, analysis of multispectralimages, measurement of size-frequency distributions of impact craters in carefully chosen areas, and geological mapping and stratigraphic analysis.
The ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectral features of the icy satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are determined in part by the chemical alteration and sputtering of the surface materials by the energetic plasma ions and electrons trapped in these planetary magnetospheres.

A weak correlation of the presence of this feature with asteroid diameter suggests that asteroid heating that occurred shortly after their formation could have been caused by a mechanism having a dependency on both heliocentric distance and size, consistent with electromagnetic induction.
Ida's exotic dynamical environment may be the key to the puzzling distribution of ejecta blocks.
The general estimate of the age of Ida is of the order of 1 Gyrs, while the collisional life time of Dactyl is supposed to be of the order of 100 to 200 Myrs.

Dactyl is approximately 1.5 km in diameter, has an albedo and spectral reflectance similar to that of Ida, and orbits Ida in a prograde direction with a period of roughly 20 hr.
Chapman (1995, 69), using the Galileo observations of Gaspra, Ida, and Dactyl as well as other recent asteroid research, suggests that meteorites (and their larger siblings, the Earth-approaching asteroids) are derived, in a fairly representative fashion, from main-belt asteroids, which include all common meteorite types, including ordinary chondrites.
In addition to those papers listed in the preceding two sections there were four others, given here, which are of interest to members of Commission 15: Calvin and King (1993, 63) present reflectance spectra of iron-bearing phyllosilicates and discuss their relationship to CM chondrites.
