Originally named Vivian, the town was renamed Oatman in 1908/09, ostensibly after a pioneer family attacked and killed by Indians near Gila Bend, Arizona in 1851.
The town received double blows, first in the 1950s, when Route 66 was re-routed around Oatman, and later when I-40 was routed well south of the town.
The 158,000-acre Superstition Wilderness (and environs) have it all for the Western explorer – a ghost town (Goldfield), Indian ruins, abandoned ranches, and abandoned mines.

Since 1993 I have been visiting western ghost towns during business or pleasure trips out west, and I've started this website to share the fun I've had with other ghost town enthusiasts.
On each town's page I have photos from my visit, and, where possible, I compare the condition of the town at the time of my visit with what it was when visited by various authors whose books are listed on the state pages.
I've always enjoyed hunting for ghost towns, and I found it interesting to note how the towns had changed in the years since they were visited by these authors.

This is a list of the Ghost Towns that I have run across in the county.
Glenwood Park, a 10 acre plot of ground south of town was an amusement park for the people of southwestern Oklahoma, and in 1973, was made a part of Mt. Park.
It is shown on older maps as a town, but all Cahill consisted of was a grain elevator, the scale house and an old wooden boxcar sitting flat on the ground with no doors to close.

If a towns sole support is the output of a mine, the town was doomed to ultimate desertion.
One thing to remember, as a ghost town treasure hunter, is that simply because a town dies, no matter what the reason, if it was really a going Boom Town, the site is well worth looking over.
As confusing as they are, attempt to know your state laws concerning treasure hunting and the status of ghost towns in your state.
