	IQ
		IQ tests do not purport to measure intelligence the way a ruler measures height (absolutely), but rather the way a race measures speed (relatively); IQ is described as a "quotient" because, originally, it represented the ratio between a person's "mental age" and actual chronological age.
		IQ scores are designed to correlate with academic success, and have been found, in differing degrees, to correlate to job performance, socioeconomic advancement, and "social pathologies", but it has also been shown that the correlation of IQ to achievement varies based on other factors, and this issue remains controversial.
		IQ scores have been taken by many psychologists to be a proxy for intelligence, and a measurable definition of certain types of intellectual ability, but generally not taken to represent intelligence perfectly or to represent all types of intelligence (e.g., creativity).

		Admission to this society, founded 3 months after Mensa was founded in the U.K., was based on College Admission tests to the University of California at Berkeley, which was similar to the American College Admission exams later taken by American students across the USA in the late 1940's.
		The MM Society (also known as "Double M") was founded in 1966 as a Mensa's Mensa, with the intent of accepting at the top 50th of the top 50th (one-in-2500) percentile.
		The Exa Society is a name suggested by Richard May in the August 1983 issue of Vidya, the journal of the Triple Nine Society, as a society that would accept only one entity per 10-to-the-15th power, meant as a parody of the "Mega" Society's name.

		A repressive society is one in which there may or may not be nominally democratic institutions but control is firmly in the hands of a ruling clique which seeks to impose its will on the membership, especially through restrictions on free speech.

		The tests are most powerful at their middle ranges, where the difference between an I.Q. of 100 and 105 may be a matter of several questions on the test itself.
		The Top One Percent Society and Intertel have cutoffs at the 99th percentile, and the One-in-a-Thousand and the Triple Nine Societies have cutoffs at the 99.9th percentile.
		If one takes great pleasure in the solution of IQ test problems or in (meaningless) competition with other testees, then one might regard every minute spent on such a test as emotionally "gainful." And if one has nothing better to do anyway, the cost to one's other pursuits may be small.
