The following are two non-definitive lists of the all-time highest-grossing films.
For example, the film which has sold the highest number of tickets ever is Gone with the Wind, despite the population in 1939 being far lower than it is today, yet it does not feature anywhere on this list.
The list is based on the total worldwide box office receipts, updated to March 9, 2006.

Film preservation of decaying film stock is a matter of concern to both film historians and archivists, and to companies interested in preserving their existing products in order to make them available to future generations (and thereby increase revenue).
Stock widths and the film format for images on the reel have had a rich history, though most large commercial films are still shot on (and distributed to theaters) as 35 mm prints.
Animation is the technique in which each frame of a film is produced individually, whether generated as a computer graphic, or by photographing a drawn image, or by repeatedly making small changes to a model unit (see claymation and stop motion), and then photographing the result with a special animation camera.

Terrance Malik, whose World War II opus "The Thin Red Line" opens nationally Jan. 8, hasn't made a movie since the 1970s.

When the movie finally started it played for 15 minutes and got just about to the part when the Roman soldier gets his ear practically cut off in the garden where Judas betrays Jesus and the film quit.
You would have had to be living in a cave not to know about its release into theaters.

It would be interesting to compare the top grossing films of this year say to 1984 or 1964 or 1944.
Those on the list that outgrossed their worth are Shrek 2, Harry Potter, The Day After Tomorrow, Shark Tale, I, Robot, Troy (Dreck) 50 First Dates (Terrible, terrible, terrible) Van Helsing (Possibly the worst action movie EVER) Fahrenheit 9/11, and The Grudge.
