English hip hop is a branch of the originally American hip hop musical genre, that started in the mid-1980s with rappers such as Derek B, MC Mell'O', 3 Wize Men, Cookie Crew, and DJs such as Coldcut and Simon Harris.
Hip hop is a cultural movement that began among urban African Americans and Puerto Ricans in the Bronx borough of New York City during the early 1970s, and has since spread around the world.
Etymology: Formed by combining the adjective hip in its slang sense 'cool' with the noun hop, which also had a well-established slang sense 'dance'; hip-hop had existed as an adverb meaning 'with hopping movements' since the seventeenth century, but hip hop as a noun was a quite separate development.

Alternative hip hop generally refers to a specific style of hip hop that is opposed to the mainstream sounds of gangsta rap.
However, certain other hip hop genres are also alternative and are sometimes referred to with the same term, including a mixture of heavy metal, hard rock and hip hop that would eventually come to be known as rapcore, and a mixture of 1970s-style soul music and hip hop called nu soul.

But what it does signal to me is that there's a lot of us who are now making a blip on the radar, you know, whether we're organizers at rallies, whether we're musicians, whether we're people who are speaking out, authors, writers, actors.
You know, more important to me or more important than me you know, being a part of that is the fact that our civil rights are being eroded across the board for every person.
